Baby Who Disappeared From Hospital Found

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - A day-old baby girl with respiratory problems who was taken from her mother's hospital room was found unharmed Friday 150 miles away.

Police used footprints to identify a baby found in an alley in Bowling Green as Grayci Jean Barrows, reported abducted from a hospital in Stanford about 4 a.m., State Police Trooper Nick Stephens said.

The baby, umbilical cord still attached, was brought to the Medical Center at Bowling Green after a passer-by found her in an alley behind Grandma's Attic, a consignment shop here.

Lequetta Dolbeare, an employee of Grandma's attic, said a woman walking her dog found the baby.

A woman who worked part-time at Fort Logan Hospital, where Grayci was born in Stanford, was questioned Friday, State Police Sgt. Phil Crumpton said.

The woman was apprehended just outside Franklin at a truck stop near the Tennessee line when someone overheard her on the telephone complaining about being named in an Amber Alert issued for little Grayci.

Grayci was born Thursday and needs to be on oxygen, Crumpton said. The Amber Alert was canceled after a positive identification was made.

Harry Nickens, a spokesman for Fort Logan Hospital, said a woman apparently entered the room of Grayci's mother to ``give her a break from what had been a restless night.''

He said the woman was not on duty but was dressed in her hospital uniform when she allegedly took the baby and left the hospital. The woman had been employed at the hospital as a part-time aide since December 2002, Nickens said.

The baby is the first child of Samantha and Cory Barrows, seniors at Casey County High School, Nickens said.

This is strange. At our hospital we have matching bracelets for mother and baby. I guess security was lax that day . . .

When my son was born in 2002 they had these house-arrest ankle things that would lock down the whole hospital if they left the maternity area. They wouldn't take it off until he was strapped into his carseat on our way out the door. That hospital needs to invest in some of those.

The hospital where I had my baby in January put an alarm tag on his ankle. It went off if he went out the door, OR if it was removed from his leg.

The kidnapper was an employee, dressed in her uniform. She can probably leave by alternate routes.

Ah, I should read the whole story first. When kids have kids, it is to be expected that the spawn will have a tres stupid name.

When I was doing my indoc rotation to be a hospital corpsman i forgot one of those tags in my pocket. Needless to say it caused a bit of commotion. Maybe thats why I spent many years at sea?

To be the cynic here, is it possible that the High School age parents had anything to do with this?

That better not be Grayci's pop - that's Xena's Guy! (An old picture, mind you. He has better overalls now.)

Yessir! I would allocate 100% of the liability in that direction.

Yeah, it's discouraging ... but there's always a possibility for a decent life for the little baby, in spite of the name :-).

Robert B. Parker, the novelist, noticed the phenomenon of young parents giving their kids dumb names. He has a character named Ty-Bop, born to a 13-year-old mother ... probably took the name from life!

Names fascinate me, and I've long theorized that the proper name is much more of a career and social entree than we like to think.

Did you see that study last year about interviewees with "Anglo" and "ethnic" names? It was so interesting! In this study, people named Greg and Brad and Katherine got interviews quite a bit more than people named Lakeisha and Tawanda.

In some ways, yes. The high schoolers were inexperienced in life and too trusting. You should treat your hospital stay in the hospital with the baby as any other public place and be vigilant.

When I had my first baby, we were told at our prenatal class that we shouldn't leave the baby unattended and should check the credentials of anyone who took the baby. We were discouraged to leave the baby alone in the room at any time. When I needed to take a shower, I was very quick and repeatedly looked out to make sure the baby was still there.

Fort Logan hospital in Stanford is not a big hospital. Stanford is barely a wide place in the road. I would surprised if their security for post partum had changed over the past 20 years...
