MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- About 100 middle school students wore pink to protest restrictions imposed by school officials concerned that the color was associated with gang activity.

The protest Wednesday at Clifford Pierce Middle School resulted in mass wardrobe changes, said Principal James Joiner. Administrators made some students who wore pink shirts replace them with school T-shirts. Several students, anticipating the order to change, brought a second set of clothes to school.

When I first saw this, I was sure it must be an April Fool's joke. Apparently not. How stupid.

Superintendent Tony Lux said the policy had been misinterpreted as a ban."Students are not banned from wearing pink clothing," Lux wrote in a letter sent home to parents Wednesday.

If it wasn't a ban, then why were the students wearing pink forced to change?

I am a 4-H Volunteer.

I am here to tell you that pink, any shade, is a hot "in" color this year. Many of our girls wear it, and it signifies NOTHING.

Next thing you know, the schools will be banning 4-H green T' as indicators of a "gang".......

This is one of the most assinine things I've ever heard. I can understand banning gang emblems in the public school, or profanity printed on t-shirts and the like. But banning a COLOR? And pink, at that? Good Lord--90% of my pre-teen neighbor's wardrobe is pink!

Even if it is "the wearing of any color when worn by groups of students to set themselves apart as an exclusive group," such an interpretation is highly subjective. That would, I believe, apply to any color in the rainbow. Colts fans wear blue "to set themselves apart as an exclusive group." Goths choose black "to set themselves apart as an exclusive group." Gay groups seem to have adopted the color purple "to set themselves apart as an exclusive group." And who can determine that gang girls can't wear pink, but non-gang girls can? Geez-o-Pete.

I shared this story with my husband and daughter this morning and we all had a good laugh. These poor kids will have a hard time buying new clothes in some dept stores if they have to avoid the color pink. Our local dept store looks as though the buyer has a pink fetish.

Like when you go to a neighborhood with winged skull graffitti and someone says "this neighborhood is Red and White" (meaning Hells Angels territory), here a lot of times you go into a ghetto neighborhood and there'll be a whole bunch of houses with flowers, nice new paint, etc... people say it's "The Pink Ghetto", that they gays have moved in for really cheap and are bringing up the neighborhood a bit.

Also really gay guys are called "Pink Dons" or "Pink Don Vito" meaning really really gay.
