US Promises to Punish Those Responsible for Gruesome Iraq Attacks

The top U.S. official in Iraq says Wednesday's gruesome attacks on four American civilians whose burned bodies were put on display in the town of Fallujah will not go unpunished.

"It's going to be deliberate, it will be precise and it will be overwhelming," U.S. General Mark Kimmitt said, speaking to reporters in Baghdad. He warned insurgents in the town of Fallujah to be prepared for U.S. forces to strike back following Wednesday's killing of four American contractors by a frenzied mob that dragged their charred bodies through the streets.

Televised footage of the act has provoked outrage from Americans in the United States and led U.S. administrator in Baghdad Paul Bremer to issue a warning.

"Their deaths will not go unpunished," he promised.

The White House blamed the attacks on supporters of Saddam Hussein. The remains of the four were to be turned over to the U.S. military.

A day after the attack, three American soldiers were injured in another attack near Fallujah, this time when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb.

Expert: 'close to zero' chance of violence

By Lanie Lippincott Peterson

Savannah Morning News
April 23, 2004

Despite "pregame jitters" about the G-8 Sea Island Summit this June, Savannah's chance for violent protests is "close to zero," an expert on the international meetings said Thursday.

University of Toronto political science professor John Kirton suggested in a talk at Armstrong Atlantic State University that local residents "can relax a bit" about the June 8-10 meetings.

"I understand the anxiety," said Kirton, who directs the G8 Research Group and has studied the summits for years. At some of those international meetings, protesters clashed with police, businesses were looted and, at one summit, a demonstrator was shot to death.

But this year, "The chance of there being any property damage, violent protests, a few windows shattered is close to zero," Kirton said.

Reacting to those comments, Capt. Gerry Long of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department said, "I would not make assumptions about what can or cannot happen. It's our job to plan for the worst case scenario" including the possibility of anarchists joining protesters.

....

Kirton ticked off a list of reasons why he doubted there would be violence in June:

l After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, protesters are "more sobered" and aren't as likely to use violence.

l Savannah doesn't have "a local infrastructure" that supports large numbers of protesters. By contrast, when Genoa hosted the G-8 in 2001, that city was home to a lot of "old-line communists" who gave outsiders free food and lodging. In that environment, a group like the Red Brigade could easily join demonstrators.

Also, Kirton doesn't believe there's strong "animosity" toward world leaders, including President Bush. At the Genoa Summit, there was open antipathy toward Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Most Savannah residents aren't likely to support protesters, he said.

....

For all Kirton's optimism, he wouldn't rule out the possibility that protests this year might be "hijacked" by a group such as al-Qaida or "the neo-Nazi crowd."

Savannah Morning News

Vox Populi:

"Free speech and public dissent are not the problem. The problem is the lawlessness, looting and other destructive behavior demonstrated by (G-8) summit protestors in other cities in the past. The residents of Savannah have rights, too."

"There are no freedoms that allow protestors to destroy other people's property. Is the ACLU saying the protestors have freedoms that the rest of us don't have? With freedom comes responsibility. We'd like to see the protestors act like good, law-abiding citizens."

Tanker truck stuck under Evansville overpass

Associated Press
April 22, 2004

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- A Mack truck hauling a 10-foot diameter oil tank became stuck beneath a highway overpass today, forcing the rerouting of morning rush-hour traffic.

The top of the oil tank became stuck under the Interstate 64 overpass about 7:30 a.m. as the truck was traveling on U.S. 41. Police removed the truck two hours later, but lanes of traffic remained closed for hours as the bridge was inspected for damage.

The truck driver, Jerre Hout, 62, of Noble, Ill., was cited for not having proper registration and for operating an oversize vehicle, said Sgt. Todd Ringle of Indiana State Police. He also received five other citations, Ringle said.

The truck was impounded by authorities, he said.

Reasons scarce for arsenal
Michael Breit's alleged 'hit list' is sealed by federal authorities

By CORINA CURRY, Rockford Register Star

ROCKFORD -- A bumper sticker that reads "Yeah! You can have my gun -- BULLETS FIRST," a tattoo shop ad and an American flag decal decorate the outside of a car belonging to a Rockford man who authorities believe was stockpiling guns, ammunition and bomb-making materials to attack the government, police and liberals.

Few details emerged about 20-year-old Michael Breit after his arrest on federal charges of illegally receiving explosives with intent to use them to kill, injure or intimidate any person or damage or destroy any property. If convicted, Breit could face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

No one answered the door at Breit's Sunnyside Drive apartment building. Breit's parents, James and Leslie Breit, refused to comment. Employees at a Loves Park gun shop where Breit claims to have purchased assault-type firearms and bomb-making materials in recent months said they barely know him.

According to court documents, Breit completed the 10th grade and has been working the past five years at Aaron's Electrical Service in Rockford. Breit has no juvenile record. He has no adult record beyond tickets for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and fishing without a license. He has never been in prison. Court documents say that he "became hostile and defensive and refused to answer any further questions without his lawyer" when he was asked about drug and alcohol use.

Court records also reveal that Breit owned several firearms, several hundred rounds of ammunition, several knives, a sword, hand grenade, bags and boxes of fireworks and bomb-making parts. His home library carried such titles as "The Anarchist Cookbook," which includes instructions on how to make pipe bombs and other explosives, and "The Turner Diaries," a novel about armed revolution against the federal government.

Authorities also seized several of Breit's handwritten notes and drawings, which included a list of current and former federal officials and public figures that he "marked to die" because of political or anti-gun beliefs, drawings of weapons, an armed attack on a limousine and an essay titled "Revolutionary Strike Force," which outlines a plan to kill 1,500 people at a Democratic presidential caucus.

Breit's hit list was sealed as part of the investigation.

The contents of Breit's apartment and his alleged intent to carry out violence surfaced Sunday night when a female neighbor called 911 to report hearing a gunshot.

Rockford police investigated the call. According to court documents, Breit told the officers that he "screwed up" and that he accidentally fired a round from a newly purchased AK-47 assault rifle into a door frame as he attempted to dismantle the gun. Officers observed the bullet hole in the door frame. They discovered Breit's arsenal of weapons and threatening notes and notified agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Breit's one-story, eight-unit apartment building is in a mainly single-family residential area north of Forest Hills Country Club. The windows of the apartment next to Breit's are adorned with Precious Moments decorations.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Keith Syfert would not share details of the case against Breit, except to say that the situation is serious.

"Anyone in possession of explosives and bomb-making materials accompanied by a list of targets, that's something that authorities are going to take very seriously," he said.

Syfert would not release Breit's arrest photo, nor would he say if Breit owns a valid Firearms Owner Identification card. He praised the Rockford Police Department for its work on the case. He couldn't recall a similar arrest in the area in recent years.

Breit is in federal custody. He will appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge P. Michael Mahoney in Rockford this morning. Rockford attorney Dan Cain entered an appearance Tuesday on Breit's behalf.

"This is overblown," said Dan Bement, an employee at Bullet Stop Gun Shop in Loves Park where Breit told ATF agents that he purchased some bomb-making items.

"If this is true, what people are saying, then the guy is an idiot -- there's no reason to fire a gun that way in the city limits. Writing all that stuff down, that was ridiculous," Bement said. "If all these allegations are true, then he should be put in jail. ... I think it's just giving the rest of us that like the sport of shooting a bad name, and it makes me mad."

Bement said he might recognize Breit but didn't know him well.

"The kid came in and bought a gun," he said. "I'm sure he checked out, or we wouldn't have sold him anything. It seemed perfectly normal."

Steve Kauz, who also works at Bullet Stop, said Breit wasn't a regular.

"There are crazy people out there," Kauz said. "We don't talk about that stuff in here, that bomb-making stuff or anything that sounds wrong. We always try to talk with people about what they're looking to do with what they buy. If we ever heard something like that, we'd politely ask them to leave and call the Loves Park police."

Although Breit's light blue Chevy Corsica bears a National Rifle Association emblem sticker and another sticker that reads "My President is Charlton Heston, NRA," it's unclear if he is a member of the nationwide gun ownership advocacy group.

"I don't have any idea who that person is," said Michael Huber, NRA senior field representative who covers the Rockford area from his office near Bloomington.

"The mission of the NRA is to uphold the Constitution and the Second Amendment ... what this person is accused of is not reflective at all of what the NRA stands for."

Rockford Register Star reporter Mike Wiser contributed to this report.

And don't forget this!!! This has been updated with current intelligence.

Somebody ping the White House:

THIS IS THE ONLY SMOKING GUN YOU WILL EVER NEED REGARDING THE WAR IN IRAQ!!!!

Question:

Three years have passed since the putative meeting in Prague between hijacker Mohammed Atta and Iraq Consul al-Ani. What has the CIA, FBI, Czech intelligence (BIS) and other intelligence services established about the activities of the alleged participants at this meeting?

Answer:

1) Ahmad Khalil Ibrahim Samir al-Ani served as consul at Iraq's embassy in Prague between March 1999 and April 21, 2001 and he was activity involved in agent-handling during this period.

2) Mohammed Atta applied for a visa to visit the Czech Republic on May 26, 2000 in Bonn, Germany According to Czech visa records, Atta identified himself as being a "Hamburg student." Since a visa was not necessary to catch a Czech plane to the US, Czech intelligence concluded he had business in the Czech Republic.

3) Just prior to leaving for the U.S., Atta made 2 trips to the Czech Republic in 2000. The first was on May 30, where he went without a visa to the transit lounge of Prague International Airport; the second was by bus to Prague on June 2 with visa BONN200005260024.

4) On April 4, 2001, Atta checked out of the Diplomat Inn in Virginia Beach and cashed a check for $8,000 from a SunTrust account, according to the FBI. Atta was not seen again in America by any witness before April 11, 2001.

5) Al-Ani scheduled a meeting on April 8,2001 with a "Hamburg student" according to an appointment calendar subsequently turned up by Czech intelligence in a surreptitious search of the Iraq Embassy (presumably after the defeat of Iraq in April 2003.)

6) Al-Ani was observed meeting a young Arab-speaking man on the outskirts of Prague on April 8th by a watcher for Czech counterintelligence.

7) After seeing Atta’s picture on September 11th, the watcher identified the Arab-speaking man as Mohammed Atta.

8 ) Al-Ani was expelled from Prague less than 2 weeks after that meeting.

9 ) After 9-11, Al-Ani denied that he met Atta , as did the Baghdad government. Al-Ani repeated that denial after he was detained by U.S. forces in July 2003.

10 ) The CIA determined, according to George Tenet testimony before a Joint Committee of Congress (June 18, 2002): “Atta allegedly traveled outside the US in early April 2001 to meet with an Iraqi intelligence officer in Prague, we are still working to confirm or deny this allegation. It is possible that Atta traveled under an unknown alias since we have been unable to establish that Atta left the US or entered Europe in April 2001 under his true name or any known aliases.”

11) Subsequently, Spanish intelligence found evidence that Algerians Khaled Madani and Moussa Laouar provided false passports to Mohamed Atta and his associate Ramzi bin al-Shibh.

and the ten commandments can't be seen in a public building

TRUTH IS INDEED PAINFUL

Despite how you may have personally felt about the issue, there was a good logical reason for removing the Ten Commandments monument from the Alabama Supreme Court building.

You cannot post things like: "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shall Not Lie, and "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians.

It creates a hostile work environment
