Cairo -- Arab governments across the Middle East are bending or breaking their own censorship rules for "The Passion of the Christ,'' the Mel Gibson film that sparked fears of anti-Semitism when it was released in the West.
In Egypt, where the film opened to large crowds Wednesday, "it's getting a very special treatment," said Mustafa Darwish, a film critic and former president of the Egypt Censorship Authority.

The arab leadership think that if they let their subjects watch "The Passion" they will whip up anti-Jewish emotions.
What they didn't think of is that this movie will start (hopefully) a massive number of conversions of muslims...

I've come late to this discussion party, but is this type of reporting supposed to include an unstated premise that the film IS anti-semitic since all the Arabs love it?
Methinks that it might be that some of the audience just like to see a Jew get the sh!t beat out of him and then killed.

shattering previous records set by "Titanic" and the James Bond movie "Die Another Day." Lebanon is 30 percent Christian, which may help to explain the film's success there. But in predominantly Muslim Qatar, Syria and Jordan, the movie is also attracting unprecedented crowds. In Qatar, it is being shown on seven screens four times a day. "We have broken all records," said Berthe Zeeni, marketing director for Prime Pictures, the film's Middle East distributor.I think this is showing that the Lord truely does work in mysterious ways. I knew when I saw the hystrionics of the Jewish left in America dividing the Christians from Israel that the Arab world would be intrigued, given their fear that we are "controled by the Jews." I also knew that since the Arab world doesn't have the spite and the cynicism towards organized religion that the West does that they would be more open to the movie, but I never dreamed it would be so widely successful. This is incrediable.
As in America where no one yet has been able to quantify the effect this movie is going to have on our culture long term and how that will show itself, the effect long term is equally unknowable. Both however, will be positive.

Also what they didn't realize is that this movie shows so many Jews in such a good light, that it cannot be consistent with Arab government/Islamist propoganda.

Opening in Fallujah to rave reviews...The people in that town are secularists and former Fedayeen, their only God was Saddam, hardly representative of the Arab world.

What gets me, particularly, is that in the last region of the Earth where the Bible is still banned, they are letting in a movie that is based on a key portion thereof. Hope they left in the Isaiah quote at the beginning and the (SPOILER ALERT) Resurrection at the end, and made sure Arabic subtitles are accurate...

Moslems do not believe Jesus was crucified so the man depicted being crucified must be the "other man" and not a prophet. So the movie is legal to them!
