(Hamden-WTNH, Mar. 31, 2004 6:15 PM) _ A Connecticut man is under arrest for storing a cache of weapons in a Hamden home.

We're talking about serious firepower here, but that's not even the whole story.

He's also wanted on weapons charges connected to a border arrest in Canada.

Connecticut's number one most wanted fugitive is let out of court in handcuffs by US Marshalls.

Howard Brendanberg was picked up in a massive raid yesterday in Hamden.

"He ranked high on our list because he was a violent offender and he ranks on the top of the list for any state, local or federal agency,"says Paul Winterholder.

Take a look at what agents seized in the raid; a shotgun, ammunition and the most disturbing item special shotgun rounds that can be made into boobytraps.

"Normal shotgun shells have pellets inside or BB's, these have arrows, slivers of metal that can be shot into a body."

Last May the Canadian border police say they caught Brendanberg allegedly trying to smuggle three truckloads of weapons, bomb components and ammunition into Quebec.

He was charged with 237 counts of weapons violations and then released on bail.

The US Marshalls say he skipped and they found him in his home in Hamden. Because of Brendanberg's history with weapons they sent in specialist in the bomb squads from the FBI and ATF.

"It was a joint raid with Hamden police, FBI, ATF. We were not taking any chances. We were going in for the arrest."

He will face an extradition hearing next month to face the charges in Canada.

Like regular shot gun ammo (buck or slug) can't be shot into a body. What a bunch of idiots...

Hardly a cache.

These shotgun shells are simple Flechette shells, sometimes used by the Isreali Army, but most countries don't use them because they don't work real well.

Yeah, a real criminal genius -- get arrested, and goes home. Something tells me we're not getting the whole story here -- even in New England, a single shotgun and a case of flechette ammunition does not constitute a "cache". For that, you'd need at least the shotgun, plus a 10-22 and a couple of bricks of .22 lr.

special shotgun rounds that can be made into boobytraps

With a string & a nail you can make regular shells into a booby trap, too.

It's a common gun show item. Good for sales and a interesting conversation piece, but not for self defense.

Preach'n to the choir here, PJ. But, I guess the media has to scare the uninformed public, huh?

Yeah, that always frustrates me when my 12-gauge shell pellets bounce off human flesh.

WHO THE HELL ARE WE HIRING INTO LAW ENFORCEMENT??? THIS IS RIDICULOUS.
