Tax As You Go [Activism alert !! ]

The performance of the current Republican Congress has been disappointing, to say the least. But it would go from mediocre to awful if some of its Members succeed in undermining their one significant achievement -- last year's tax cuts.

That's what is at stake this week as the House and Senate conferees reconcile the two chambers' budget resolutions for Fiscal Year 2005. Some Republicans want to join Democrats in making it more difficult to pass new tax cuts or to make the existing Bush tax cuts permanent. Last week, the House shied away from applying something called pay-as-you-go budget rules, or "paygo," to its budget resolution. But the idea has some GOP support, as a 209-209 procedural vote on paygo Tuesday showed.

We and our family members have been shocked this year to learn after tax preparation that our tax bill is bigger than ever. We are not the "rich." Something funny is going on and tax law is too complex for anyone who is not a CPA to figure it out. Some kind of simplification is absolutely needed.

Yes. But see...

Neither Republican nor Democrat lawmakers want any form of tax simplification. Pork is what it is all about -- on both sides of aisle.
