"Protesters dishonor those who sacrificed their lives"-Belated Springfield, MO Freep Report
Springfield News-Leader ^ | 3/31/04 | Mary Ann Bullock

Posted on 03/31/2004 2:08:28 PM PST by swmopatriot

Edited on 05/07/2004 7:30:52 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

On March 20, I drove along East Sunshine past a small group of peace activists on one side of Sunshine holding up a piece of tarp with sheets of 8?-by-11-inch paper attached supposedly telling the stories of American soldiers killed in Iraq ("Wall bridges feelings of loss," March 21 News-Leader). Directly across the street were two 18-year-olds, Jason Highley holding up a sign reading "Terrorists are the enemy, not George W. Bush" and Matt Simpson was holding up another sign that said "Freedom's not free." Those two boys have learned more in 18 years than those across the street, such as Ed Janosik, have in 75 or 80 years. Yes, we grieve for those who have given their lives, and also for their families. And yes, each of those who have given their lives deserve to be honored to the highest degree. Those brave men volunteered to do what they were doing when they lost their lives because they knew that if the terrorists are not stopped, a lot more Americans will lose their lives as a result. After they have fallen, to use their stories in that manner dishonors them rather than honors them, because protest demonstrations such as that only give encouragement to the terrorists.

I apologize for the lateness of this report about our "Support the Troops" demonstration but I was gone most of last week. I saw this article today in the paper and it reminded me that I hadn't posted about this yet. Both Jason and I are greatly appreciative of Mrs. Bullock for what she wrote and also for her conviction in pursuing the right policies.

As she stated, we were outnumbered by the anti-war protesters but we still stayed on until after they left. They had no signs identifying their cause or purpose so many people were fooled as to what they were doing. We had several people come over and talk to us saying they had seen the wall and thought it was in support of our troops only to go to the table and find out that the real intent was to get signatures on petitions opposing the war. These people were understandably mad and thanked us for being out there. It is sad that the position of the other side is so morally and intellectually untenable that they have to resort to deception.

All in all it was a good day. They may have had more people and media coverage, but we had by far the most positive reaction from passers-by.

One thing I forgot to mention is that when we showed up the peace protesters had not a single American flag. A little more than 30 minutes after we had arrived, a few small American flags that they had apparently run out and bought appeared just in time for them to be in the video and pictures taken by the local media. Also, here is a picture from our local newspaper of us:

I don't presume to speak for all members of the armed forces. I speak for one.

THANK YOU!

Hearing of young people like you gives me a glimmer of hope for the future.

Never think that your actions do not get noticed. Don't think that the troops don't feel your support.

I know that I will forward your story to at least 10 sailors and marines, they will forward it on, and on it will go. And sometime soon, during a break from patrol or a break from "watch," a soldier, sailor or marine will read about your support and be refreshed, knowing EXACTLY what (s)he is fighting for.

Again...

THANK YOU.

To: everyone
Hello all:

It's Jason here, Matt's friend, from the article mentioned above. I also wanted to give my personal thanks to Mrs. Bullock for her very kind, encouraging, and prioritized letter published by the News-Leader (or News-Filter, whichever you prefer). I admire Mrs. Bullocks commitment to what Matt called "right policies". These policies were represented in a very level-headed and logical way in her letter.

Ultimately, I believe the most thanks goes to the troops in Iraq. It is them and the cause for which they fight that I bother to show up for these little counter-protests and rallies. I have two very close friends who have so far been involved in Iraqi Freedom, as well as an uncle who is in Iraq as I write this. I know some service members have posted in response to this article, and to you - let me give you a pat on the back and a very distinct "Bravo Zulu!" I wish I could repay you for the enormous sacrifices you and your families are making.

Thanks for your input everyone. May God continue to bless America!

You weren't outnumbered, especially in the accumulated I.Q. department! Great Job!

Freeping leftists is fun, and it is good for the morale of our troops. Keep up the good work!

Good Job!

I am sure, since the other side appears to have no moral center, that you will be called upon to do this in the future.
