In my last post here today I would say this.
Al Franken is not an improvisational comedian that can shine in this venue. He throws too much low level garbage between the occasional funny things he might come up with.
He can write because the material can be reviewed over and over and the klonkers are less likely to appear as in live TV and Radio.
The guy always has come off a dull to me. A (B- talent) on a good day.

I saw him live in Orlando (Disney) at the 2001 Lotusphere.
It was an IBM/Lotus Notes convention at the peak of the .com craze. 10,000 person convention.
He shows up and did not know his audience. Techies are generally conservative. He started out slamming Bush. People didn't laugh, he then did some really nasty Bush comments and people started booing. He then raised his hand and said, "I know, I know.... I should have learned my lesson and stayed away from politics. A few years back I did a fund raiser for Pol Pot, then I saw the Killing Fields and (pause) I just felt like an ass."
After that he had us. He relaxed. His comments were free form and very funny.
