Explosion and Fire at Texas City Chemical Plant

Posted on 03/30/2004 5:46:35 PM PST by i_dont_chat

Channel 13, Houston, Texas, just reported a series of 4 explosions and a large fire at Amoco Chemical Company in Texas City -- I think it is called BP now.

My mother in TC felt 2 of the blasts. Plant is at Highway 146 and Texas Avenue.

Move to a room with the fewest windows and doors. Tape around doors, windows, exhaust fans and vents using plastic sheeting or garbage bags, if directed.

May I ask, does anyone know, how long can a typical family of 4 survive in a sealed room before the oxygen runs out? I wonder how many folks will be found dead in the morning.

Every Spring and Fall some high pressure vessels and/or pipes fail in refiery row down in Houston. The Texas City Amoco plant is an old horse that always scared me when ever I drove through it.

That incident happened in the spring of 1947 and was said to have been a munitions ship. Over five hundred people died in the explosion,

I was told that ship was carrying fertilizer, but was also told that there is very little of public records about the incident.

I don't doubt that at all. I don't know if I gave it a correct characterization using the OSHA link. They documented some of the Texas' Gulf Coast refinery and chemical plant explosions and their aftermath. They used news footage, home video and commentary. It's one of those situations when the word "spectacular" is used in it's negative sense along with horrifying.

<> Plant personnel plan and sign off on each step taken during a maintenance turnaround and are in charge of start-up. Sometimes they leave old equipment in place to cut costs. Sometimes they forget/don't tag out lines. Yes, sometimes it is the maintenance contractors' at fault. But it is a mistake to credit them with all the blame.

hopefully, It's not as bad as the one they had 50 years ago

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Literally. It says "I survived the Texas City Disaster, April 16, 1947." There was not one person in Texas City who wasn't profoundly affected by that devastating event.

I was told that ship was carrying fertilizer, but was also told that there is very little of public records about the incident.

That is accurate. It was carrying the same substance that was used at OKC and Bali and was found by the authorities in London a day or two ago. That is, ammonium nitrate. If you do a search on "Texas City" and "ammonium nitrate" you'll get plenty of information.

The news of this explosion coming as it did was a little eerie for me. I was at the feed store just about 5 blocks from the plant on Saturday. I ran into a friend and while we were catching up with each other, we noticed a plane that was circling all around that area. It was a different looking plane. Not a twin-engine type. Not a helicopter. Not a jet. Just different from what we were used to looking at. It made a few passes right over the plant. We didn't know what to make of it, but it did cause us to remember the threats we'd heard about in the news. Then last night... KA-BOOM!!

You made a great point. I can add to your argument, a while back there was an FBI warning for apartment buildings and a threat of terrorism. A few days later there was an explosion at an apartment building in Los Angeles.
