WASHINGTON -- Consider "Condi." National security adviser Condoleezza Rice is the Bush administration's star witness, sent forth to slay the Sunday-morning dragons with her combination of academic high-mindedness and the bulletproof poise of a talk-show host.
Yet she is also an officer of the executive branch, not bound to Congress, and thus President Bush has asked her not to testify in public before the 9/11 commission set up by Congress.

So the answer to the mystery of Condi Rice may be: She's the administration's best defense, but the president's worst vulnerability. Condi is no one's vulnerability. She's a total asset.

The author's last statement shows him to be a little bit ignorant. Condi is by no means a vulnerability to Bush.

But even some Republicans in Congress have puzzled over how Rice can be willing to appear on television interview shows and agree to answer copious questions from the 9/11 commission behind closed doors, yet not be willing to face the grilling in public.I guess the Globe will find out now, since she is going to do it.
I suspect the "grilling" will be in the other direction though.
I hope she puts Clarkes fantasy novel on the remainder shelves.....
