WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer sent a letter Monday to her re-election opponent, Republican Bill Jones, asking him to debate. "With such clear differences between us on the issues, I believe that debates will be a good opportunity for Californians to better understand the clear choice that they have in this election," wrote Boxer, who criticizes Jones on the campaign trail as too conservative for California.
"I hope you will respond favorably to this request and that we can begin the process of working out the specifics," she wrote.
Jones spokeswoman Valerie Walston said the former California secretary of state looks forward to debating Boxer.
"Secretary Jones is prepared to force Boxer to defend her liberal San Francisco positions which are so out of touch with Californians," Walston said.
Boxer is seeking a third term in the November election.

I pray fervently that God would have mercy on California and remove the evil Senator Boxer from power. His will be done.

I don't get it. The only way it makes sense for Boxer to ask Jones to debate her is if, as you say, she's in trouble. But I have seen nothing anywhere to indicate that this is so. Have you? Strange!

Her negatives are way up there. But Boxer is beneath nothing in order to win, so I would not put it past her to be planning a 'Lazio' debate moment.
