Pakistan in new al-Qaeda hunt
Pakistan claimed it has fresh information that could lead to the capture or killing of Tahir Yuldashev, an Islamist leader from Uzbekistan with close ties to al-Qaeda.
The confirmation of an intensified hunt for Mr Yuldashev in Pakistan's remote northern areas bordering Afghanistan, followed earlier reports that he had been badly injured in recent exchange of fire between Pakistani troops and militants, and was on the run.
"We are actively following new leads for Yuldashev" said a senior Pakistani official on Sunday. "We are confident that he may be cornered. This would be a major, major success".
Mr Yuldashev, a leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), was accused of organising a series of bomb attacks aimed at Islam Karimov, president of Uzbekistan in 1999, for which he was later sentenced to death in absentia. Last week, Mr Karimov called upon Pakistan to extradite any Uzbek national arrested in Pakistan, raising the pressure on Islamabad to step up the hunt for Mr Yuldashev.
For the past two weeks, Pakistan's northern semi-autonomous tribal region has been the scene of intense firing between military troops and local tribesmen believed to be harboring members of al-Qaeda who fled the US military in Afghanistan.
General Pervez Musharraf, the military ruler, said his troops had surrounded a high value target in the south Waziristan area along the border.
Gen Musharraf's statement was followed by widespread speculation that Ayman Al Zawahiri, the second highest ranking al-Qaeda leader, was hiding in the area. But late last week, Pakistani officials said, Mr Al Zuwahiri may have escaped the area, possibly through a network of recently discovered underground tunnels.
Gen Musharraf on Saturday renewed his pledge to fight militants in the border region, while claiming again that al-Qaeda was responsible for two separate assassination attempts against him in December.

The ones we really need to watch our backs with are any who might have a 'legitimate' claim to the Caliphate (I think that means the Saudis and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, but maybe there are some others): one or more of them could conceivably have been convinced that if al Qaeda wins big that they will get to be the big cheese. (Al Qaeda winning big means they get the Muslim world to rise up in a united front against all us 'kufirs'--yup, even us Christians and Jews are 'kufir' and don't count as 'people of the book' if we accept Western democracy: it's been defined to be a religion in some lunatic's fatwa because it substitutes laws made by men for sharia)
