Tonight on Booknotes...Saboteurs: The Nazi Raid on America
CSPAN ^ | March 28, 2004 | Michael Dobbs

Posted on 03/28/2004 1:33:44 PM PST by billorites

Shortly after America’s entry into World War II, Adolf Hitler ordered an extensive sabotage campaign against the United States to disrupt the production of tanks and airplanes and blow up bridges and railroads. Eight German saboteurs were dispatched across the Atlantic by U-boat, one team landing in Amagansett, Long Island, the other near Jacksonville, Florida. They brought with them enough money and explosives for a two-year operation and traveled inland to explore potential targets.

The full story of this audacious endeavor is a remarkable account of a terrorist threat against America. Michael Dobbs describes the saboteurs’ training in Nazi Germany, their claustrophobic three-week voyage in submarines, and their infiltration into American life. He explores the reasons each volunteered, and their links to a network of Nazi sympathizers in the United States. He paints a portrait of the group’s leaders: George Dasch, a onetime waiter who dreamed of leaving his personal mark on history, and Edward Kerling, a fanatic Nazi caught between his love for his mistress and his love for his wife. And he shows how the FBI might never have captured the saboteurs had one of them not helped J. Edgar Hoover transform a hapless manhunt into one of his proudest accomplishments. A military tribunal, a historic Supreme Court session, and one of the largest mass executions in American history provide a stunning climax to a dangerous but failed mission.

Looks like a good Booknotes this evening.

In order to help keep your thread bumped, I'd like to piggyback it with this:

Speech
Warrior Soul
Horizon Books
Chuck Pfarrer

It is an hour program on C-SPAN2 BookTV and I have seen it before. Chuck Pfarrer is a former Navy Seal and he is terrific. Starts at 5:46 pm Eastern.

Nazi sympathizers in the United States.

I used to live near Amagansett, and one of my employees found a secret room in the basement of a local bar (where he moonlighted as a bartender) that had Nazi memorabilia, flags with swastikas, framed pictures of Hitler, etc. That was in the middle '70's.

This sums up the difference between men of WWII and the "men" of today. Back then they loved their children more than the opinions of limp-wristed lefties.

Moussaui (spl). Saddam. Empty the cells in Guantanamo. That is how real men would handle it.

The left would get over it. The enemy would respect and fear us.

The prompt execution of Saddam Hussein would send the ultimate message to the islam billionaire despot thugs around the world:

Leave us alone, and you get to keep your palaces, concubine goats and camels, little boy concubines, torture chambers and "oil for food" scams with the Kofi Annan family. F*** with us, and you die. Period.

The modern relevance of this story was that the eight saboteurs were tried before a Military Commission, not a civil court of any kind. And the Suoreme Court approved that trial by a unanimous vote of 8-0. All eight were convicted; six of them were executed.

Also of modern importance, one of the eight was clearly American (Bruno Haupt was born in Chicago) and one of the others also claimed American citizenship. The Court held that that was IRRELEVANT. The case was In Re Quirin.

I know this is hopeless, but sabotage aimed at warmaking abilities is not terrorism.

Just pimpin' for the idea that words have meanings.

OK, that's sabotage and 9/11 is terrorism, but there are shades of grey in between: As has been noted on other current threads, Saddam Hussein "warned" about 9/11 and lauded bin Laden afterward. There are many reasons to think the anthrax attacks were set in motion by Iraqi intelligence agents. More recently, an Iraqi intelligence colonel was reported to have visited Morocco shortly before the bombings in Spain.

Another key similarity is that governments cover up both terrorist attacks and sabotage, if they can. Our military and CIA have liason relationships with our "lamestream" press. The Air Arrow crash, TWA800, and AA587 all reek of sabotage/terror attacks, and all covered up.

Terrorists and sinmply malcontents get expoited by intelligence agencies all the time. Are the results terrorism, or sabotage?

Anything that inflicts terror is terrorism. For this reason, the terrorist is dependent on the attitude of those he wishes to terrorize. The United States is especially vulnerable to terrorism because there has never been an outside attack on America until 9/11.

This sums up the difference between men of WWII and the "men" of today. Back then they loved their children more than the opinions of limp-wristed lefties.

In such situations, (WWMOTD? What Would Men Of Today Do?) I like to ask myself...WWJWD? (What Would John Wayne Do?)

On the rare occasion that the answer to WWJWD is not to my liking... I ask the follow-up question: WWCD? (What Would Cthulhu Do?)

Invariably, if JW wimps out, Cthulhu has a 'progressive' snack.

I'm pleased to report that, so far, Cthulhu has gone hungry. John Wayne loves his children. He still shoots limp-wristed lefties. In his day, they were just called 'the bad guys'.
