He made clear he intends to try to turn the tables on his client's accusers by trying to put U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on the stand.
U.S. officials say they will bring Saddam to justice for alleged crimes against the Iraqi people, but the time and date of the trial have yet to be set.
Saddam is being held by U.S. forces at a secret location.

That's right, saddam hussein now has services of a french celebrity lawyer Jacques Verges, who pledged to expose bush administration during the trial that might take as long as 5 years. He plans to call Ramsfeld to the witness stand. "Ramsfeld will have to take a seat next to Saddam Hussein" he said. He also said that his defense team will focus on the american help to Saddam during the time when he used chemical agents to committ the alleged human rights atrocities. He is planning to take down many american officials who supported Saddam during and after those events.
He is also pushing for a jury selection from Saddam's home town, "where people know him best, know firsthand what he has done for the community".
So, do you think that Saddam is guilty? Do you think they will be able to convict him?

Saddam is toast.

"While I was busy gassing my fellow Iraqis, those darned Americans were sending in food to feed my people." Yeah, that ought to bring public sympathy over to his side.
At least in France.

well, he won't have ANY trouble convincing jurors that americans are the evil ones if any of those jurors hail from arab countries. that's the problem.

Saddam is a mass murdering Ba'athist terrorist son of a bitch and his choice of a French lawyer is fitting.
Your support of both is not going to get you 72 virgins. You have to strap on a bomb and murder Israeli women and children to attain that prize.

Saddam has a lawyer...look for all kinds of motions to suppress news, info, and anything that about who this scumbag was in cahoots with! Why...because any- and everything said about this POS will be reason why he needs to be freed due to an inability to get a fair trial.
I think they should let the Iraqis handle his trial. A short, swift trial - with proportional judgement similar to that his own regime.

I'm surprised Mark Geragos isn't taking the case.

Ramsey Clark was mentioned as a potential defense attorney at one point.

Seems to be a common mispelling in the foreign press, particularly that pillar of quality journalism, Pravda RU.

Well, I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt until I read the original article. In the ORIGINAL, RUmsfeld is spelled correctly. Can't blame this one on the "foreign press." Seems like maybe we have a troll who can't spell.
JMHO, of course.

Is this the strategy he used with his other war crimes cases.
It really depends on what he is actually charged with. My understanding from reports is they athe tribunal which will be set up will not follow thepath of the Eurpean's Milosavic tribunal.
The French better play nice, it looks like they are going to evenually need to be liberated, again.

Who's MILOSAVIC ?
