After much consideration, I agree that this was just another dumb accident on I-95.

But the Goethals Bridge accident in NYC today had me thinking. There was also another bridge closure in NYC, but it must be cleared up by now since it's not on the radar.

GOETHALS BRIDGE CLOSED
Mar 26, 2004 2:22 pm US/Eastern

(1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) One person was killed Friday when four trucks got into an accident on the Goethals Bridge, authorities said..... The bridge, which connects Staten Island to New Jersey, was closed shortly after the 12:40 p.m. accident, and it was not immediately known when the span would be reopened, said Port Authority spokesman Tony Ciavolella. One of the trucks was carrying liquid nitrogen, but there was no leak, Ciavolella added.

That's the narrowest bridge (the Goethals) I've ever been on, and the politicians have been talking about replacing it for years. Perhaps they might now, unless Comrade Bloomberg suddenly decides that smokers need to be punished some more.

Wouldn't surpise me in the least that four trucks were involved, since that the main route into 287 from the NJ Turnpike. With the all the seaport activity at Howland Hook and Newark, not to mention the airport, truck traffic in that area is horrendous. Driving a big rig across a narrow, two lane bridge that is still undergoing renovations at high speed is a dangerous undertaking to say the least.

Tanker on Goethals Bridge Complicates Clearing of Accident Scene

(New York-WABC, March 26, 2004) — Three tractor trailers and a dump truck collided on the Goethals Bridge Friday afternoon - killing one person.

The bridge remains shut down.

What is holding everything up is one of the trucks involved in the accident is carrying liquid oxygen. The container is still intact, but rescue officials tell us the truck is in a very precarious position.

I think it's cleared by now, but it took an awfully long time to do so, due to one of the trucks having liquid nitrogen. For what it's worth, Staten Island is not connected to Manhattan via any roadways, but is connected to New Jersey via three bridges, and Brooklyn via one bridge. This accident caused huge traffic pileups today all over the island, needless to say.

Thank you for posting this. I had missed it.
Without that span there's a lot more grief, too.
