Voter Registration Scam

Staff Report
WBNS-10TV EYEWITNESS NEWS

The Franklin County (Columbus OH) Board of Elections is warning residents of a scam artist.

An identity thief is prowling the streets of northeast Columbus. He goes door-to-door asking people to register to vote. After he receives personal information, he attempts to steal money.

At least six people have complained to the Board of Elections about the scam, but the county says B.O.E officials don't go door-to-door.

The safest way to register is to contact the Board of Elections directly.

However, not everyone who comes to your door and asks to register you to vote is out to scam you.

Many legitimate groups are having voter registration drives to get more people to the polls for the November elections.

Who else is able to register voter beside the DMV in Ohio?

Uhhh...those would be the Democrats. I wouldn't call them "legitimate" and, yes, they ARE out to scam you.

It's probably the same in all states -- the Republicans, the Democrats, and any special interest group are always interested in registering more potential voters.

You must've seen card tables set up outside county fairs or other events. The people at the table provide you the normal voter registration form, and they mail it in for you. I think they have to identify themselves or their organization on the form.

I know the Board of Elections, and both parties have these set up, and the DMV. I wasn't aware that independent groups could register voters.

The NRA, NOW, ACLU, Rock the Vote, college clubs, etc. all run voter registration drives.

I didn't know this, I just thought they encouraged it but didnt do the actual registration. Its been a while since I've had to register to vote, guess it shows.
