Hi.
I am a grunt (USMC 0311) and I never saw any grunt carry an M-16 that way either. In fact, as a swift boat officer, I don't know how aften he would have touched an M-16. I think he probably carried a .45.

What I find most weird is I don't see a strap on the rifle.

He certainly had enough ammunition for the M-16 to do some serious fighting. Of course he would have had to load it into magazines before it would have been of any real use, but it looks impressive.
