Did they have the Mars Attacks cards where you were growing up? I still remember the garish, lurid tone and the sense that we had no chance until the series shifted with "the earth strikes back" sequence.

The producers of the movie lost faith in the integrity of the story and, imo, blew it by going for laffs.

So, are the humans going to try to fight the aliens using walkie-talkies now?

I wonder when he's going to re-do Saving Private Ryan with the Allies fighting the Nazis using nothing but walkie-talkies.

Of course it can only happen now because George Lucas has slammed the brakes on Indiana Jones IV after he rejected the script.

LOL! Lucas probably rejected the script because it didn't have any cute fuzzy aliens with stupid-sounding accents.

And Spielberg had replaced Indiana Jones' whip and pistol with a flyswatter and a walkie-talkie.

Independance Day was a loose remake of it and it was made as a series in 1988. The comment was made because even Speilburg is bankrupt of original ideas.

Tom Cruise as an Englishman

Most excellent.

Of course, being a politically correct modern remake, the extensive praying at the end of the original that took place in churches and cathedrals was replaced by prayers lead by a Jewish guy, and the destruction of the aliens was accomplished not by viruses "that God, in His wisdom, had created" but by a man-made computer virus

It was the 1953 movie that was remarkably unfaithful to the book; H.G. Wells was an atheist.

Spielberg did such a good job on the Time Machine (cough, gag). I can't wait.

"I want to see a remake of "Deliverence" with Alec Baldwin reprising the Ned Beatty part."

Doesn't he squeal like a pig every time he opens his cakehole?

Tim Burton has already done the definitive version of this story - Mars Attacks.

They proved all you need to defeat them is Jim Brown and Slim Whitman.
