Iraq War Vet Lt. Col. Rutter to Speak 'The Liberation of Iraq A Soldier's Story' April 5
Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, a commander in the Iraq War, will speak on "The Liberation of Iraq A Soldier's Story" at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 5 in Cataldo Hall at Gonzaga University. The event, sponsored by GU College Republicans and the Young Americas Foundation, is free and open to the public.
Lt. Col. Rutter in desert action.
Rutter, highly decorated for valor, was a rifle company commander in Operation Desert Storm and commanded the 2nd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, as part of the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division, which served as part of the main effort in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Rutter, now retired, led his battalion in the operation in Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein from power. His unit battled enemy forces for a 21-day period and was the primary force responsible for the capture of the Baghdad airport. Rutter commanded more than 150 combat vehicles and more than 850 soldiers in the Iraq war.
"We are extremely excited to bring Lieutenant Colonel Rutter to speak on campus," said Paul Schafer, president of the GU College Republicans. "The issue of Iraq is extremely hot among students today, and with the start of the presidential election season, the issue will become even more popular. We feel it is important to provide the campus with a firsthand perspective by someone who actually served in both Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom."

i know that there have been several posts on the problems at gonzaga. as a parent of a student there, i wanted to let you know that, while there are problems with leftists on campus (as with virtually all u.s. campuses), there is also another side. unlike many universities, gonzaga also has conservatives represented. this should be a great presentation for young minds.

Col. Rutter is a hero of celebrity status in my parts. He is running for Congress in PA, and I think he will win. Go see him, and don't forget to report what happens!

"unlike many universities, gonzaga also has conservatives represented"I have a daughter attending Gonzaga. You're right, it is much more conservative than portrayed by the articles showing up on FR the past few months. I'd say 80% plus of the faculty/admin has a conservative bent, and the ones that don't are freely and frequently challenged in the classroom by the conservative student body.
Not many other colleges on the west coast can make that claim.

i know. i've seen all the nutball stuff, and i admit spokane has its share of wackos (i was there for one of the "anti-war" marches during parents' weekend this year), but the faculty is better than 90% of the campuses out there. one good sign: when athletics is important on campus, it means the lefties haven't been able to fully perform their evil. too bad the zags got beat in the second round. um, from your tag, you may differ from me on athletics, being from nevada university country.

I had to hide all weekend...I was telling everyone here that the Zags were going to destroy UNR... good thing I stayed away from the casinos.

i was impressed by nevada. watched the game at a local watering hole with my zags gear on--ouch. and double ouch since my alma mater, the creighton bluejays, imploded this year as well. glad to hear someone else has a daughter with a good experience at gonzaga. from my interactions, i think it is a great school, not perfect of course, but a generally wholesome college environment.

what district of pennsylvania is he running in? any details on his opponent, how to contact the campaign, etc? i think the country would be greatly served by some post-vietnam veterans being elected to serve

I'm from Spokane, did a lot of construction work on the Gonzaga Campus. I've got a friend who graduated from Gonzaga Law School who often fills my mailbox with Pro-Republican, Pro-Bush and anti-anything democRATS.
A deep sigh was loudly heard throughout the community when the Zags were defeated. :(

keep the faith. i am very impressed by adam morrison. i watched larry bird play in undergrad in the missouri valley conference--this guy looks like the reincarnation.
and i like spokane. it appears to be a struggling economy, though--kind of a blue-collar community--am i correct?

It is for the District Joe Hoeffel currently holds, I believe. PA District 13. Hoeffel has the rep of being a real bagadouche, if you knowwhuddamean. I think Hoeffel is challenging Arlen Specter in the Senate this time around, so he may be practically giving that seat to Rutter, which is a good thing. Rutter's politics seem like Rick Santorum's...although they may differ on the pro-life issue.
