I should have initially commented that excess alcohol consumption is associated with the folowing:
1. dilated cardiomyopathy where the heart grows abnormally and leaves you at risk of heart failure, i.e. the pump doesn't work correctly and your lungs fill up with fluid making you abnormally short of breath.
2. Spasm of coronary arteries causing a different type of angina, probably worse in clogged arteries.
3. Holiday Heart Syndrome causing abnormal rythyms.

Even a small amount of alcohol gives me a headache so I don't drink & I am safe from the bad effects as well as the good.

I am a member of the "take it of leave it club". I noticed in Feymann's biography that he quit the minute he noticed an urge to walk into a bar and start drinking. A good idea in his case. The benefits of light to moderate drinking are cancelled if alcoholism or heavy drinking is the result. Likewise, if other systems like the liver shut down, drinking has to go as well.

The benefits of light to moderate drinking extend outside the area of ingested chemicals. Many of us use a drink (or a smoke) as a means of relaxation. Being able to stand down and relax a bit every day is a life extender. Interesting that the creator set it up so that there are so many paradoxes, but thats the way it is. But one can only do this when one is the master of one's own fate. When smoking, drinking, or drug use take over one's life, (or becomes the focal point of one's life) then complete termination and rehab are in order. Take care everyone, now, it must be 5 o'clock somewhere.
