Five bodies of what appeared to be 25- to 30-year-old men were displayed to journalists at a military mortuary in Rawalpindi, a city near the capital Islamabad, late Sunday. Al-Zawahri, an Egyptian surgeon, is 52 years old.

The bodies were laid out on stretchers and in open coffins in bloodied clothes.

Military officials said they were all foreigners, but it was impossible for journalists to determine their nationality. Officials said the sixth body had decomposed and that it would have been inhumane to show it...

ISLAMABAD: Law enforcement agencies arrested 75 people for their alleged links with Al Qaeda, in raids at various places in the twin cities and adjoining areas on Sunday.

Fifty people were released after investigation and 25 were taken to an undisclosed location, sources said.

The Islamabad and Rawalpindi police and Punjab Constabulary made surprise raids at various Afghan slums in the outskirts of the twin cities to arrest Al Qaeda suspects who might have escaped the military operation in Wana. Police raided afghan slums and other areas including I-11, Shah Allahditta, Noorpur Shahan, Chauntra and Rawat.

The special branch and area police also visited various seminaries in Islamabad and Rawalpindi and checked students’ rooms and their luggage, sources said.

Police officials asked the area people to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies to arrest suspects. Rawalpindi District Police Officer Syed Murvat Ali Shah told Daily Times that the search operation would continue until the area was purged of miscreants. He said that he had directed the police high ups to hold meetings with the area notables, and consult with them on the situation.

My opinion: the capture of these 25 is the start of the specific narrowing down of OBLs whereabouts. One set of people are captured, they give up the next set. One set says OBL was here 6 months ago, the next set says he was here 2 months ago, the next set tells you he was here last week, and on it goes.

Remember, they telegraphed this operation for weeks, trying to get 'em to move. Obviously some of them took the bait, and probably led the troops to even more slimeballs. With or without al-Zawahiri, this has been an excellent operation. Thanks for the flag, Dog.

are you following this other thread about Musharaff allowing US naval operations closer to the Pakistani coast? I tell you, if I were OBL right now, that's what I would do - get on a ship, a freighter of some kind, where the circle of people around him weren't being picked off, captured, interrogated, etc. At this point, being at sea is a much safer place to hide, if he can find someway to board without being seen.

This is the difference between the old USSR and the current US. The Americans are not only able to put the military resources on the battle field, they also have the political and economic power to control the entire area.

The Soviets were able to conquer Afghanistan, but they could not win the war, because they could not control events outside the borders of Afghanistan.

30 years ago, when the Soviets were considered such a threat, they weren't. The Americans will never be successful invading Russia, or occupying Moscow, but the Americans have always had the ability to pummel the Russians/Soviets on the battlefield.

Sometimes "leakers" are accidental and sometimes they're intentional. When you can keep them on a leash, it's fun to see who, what and where they lead you to. Since it looks from the article like they knew where they went, I'd guess that they were intentional "leakers". This smells like a western intelligence operation, rather than Pakistani.
