The left angle-bracket is interpreted by the browser as the start of a tag, so any text from the < thru the next > it finds isn't displayed. To make it show up, type this:
&lt;/sarcasm>
which produces
</sarcasm>
(But then how did I make "&lt;" show up as "&lt;" and not "<"? :-)

By using &ampamp for the ampersand, thus &amplt
