Ummmm....it's dead, Jim. There are some more or less sound reasons for this. One is, of course, that you could be contacting something nasty from the carcass.
Another is that once you get your human scent on it natures clean up crew is going to be disinclined to eat it. At least we hope so. If they start thinking human scent=food it could become unpleasant.
The other reason is that there are people out there that will kill an animal take what they want and then claim that they "found it like that". Proving otherwise can be very hard unless you have a video that caught them in the act. By saying that it doesn't matter what killed it, nothing can be removed prosecution become much easier.
