Linda, what medium do you use? Are these entirely drawn on computer, or do you use paint/ink/whatever on paper and then scan them? And what's your original scale?

Medium used: My 'toons are entirely drawn on computer -- no paper, no scanning... yuck!!! PhotoShop has tools to paint with, so why mess with paper and scanning???

Original scale: original file size is 5" x 5", 150 dpi (RGB, not CMYK)

ALSO: I save the file with all umpteen bahzillion layers as a PSD file; also flattened as a JPEG file so I can post it on my website. I like to keep the PSD file with the layers so I can mess with it again if need be. I (obviously) burn these on CDs when they're done, so my harddrive doesn't get all filled up. One cartoon PSD = over 4MB.

if it helps, click on this link

It's my shamesless self promotion webpage, but it also shows a couple of my paintings (done on canvas in acrylic paint). I've painted lots of portraits over the years. Caricatures are the same thing -- except I push the limits on facial features. The paint tool in Photoshop works very much like traditional paints -- some colors are more "transparent" than others, some "wash" into seemingly different color altogether, blending colors together (done via layers in Photoshop in varying %) yeilds entirely different colors, etc, etc. The brush tool in Photoshop is really cool to me because I can change the size of it AND the "blur" or hard edge of it... same with color extraction with the erase tool.

In short, it is the SAME as painting... except you use a mouse and computer
