Democrat State Rep changes to Republican
Iowa Rep. Douglas Struyk announced he would change his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican today, and run for re-election to his Council Bluffs district.
Struyk, who is completing his first term, announced the switch Thursday evening. "My priorities have not changed. They continue to be children, education and economic growth," he said in a release.
Democrats were unaware that Struyk had made the decision at the time of the announcement. The change gives Republicans a 54-46 majority in the House.

Does this reflect a statewide trend or is it more isolated?

I am very skeptical of a re-alignment in Iowa. We'll see.

The fact that he has done this well before the election and will give the voters the chance to decide for themselves lends honor and integrity to his decision. Perhaps he is the Zell Miller of Iowa.

"My priorities have not changed. They continue to be children, education and economic growth," he said in a release."
Translation: "the RINO big tent has now widened enough that I'm assured of a continuance of all those "feel good" spending projects along with the perks of being with the GOP."

Probably strategy knowing which side his bread is buttered, but a good thing none the less.

Maybe Iowa is like South Dakota in-state politics where people think an (R) means "Re-elect" and (D) means "Don't."

Perhaps he is the Zell Miller of Iowa.Considering Struyk is putting his reelection chances on the line -- something Zell Miller never did, even when he could have given the majority back to the Rs after the Jim Jeffords flop -- the comparison to Zell Miller is an insult.

Thanks for posting this Cgg. Rumor has it that he was treated so poorly in his caucus because of his moderate views he just couldn't take it anymore.
If you check his voting record over the past 2 years, you'll find he's voted with the R's more frequently than he did the D's.
I think it's safe to say he will not be the most extreme of the left wing branch of the House Republican Caucus.
