I thought it was rather bizarre too and was not aware that Muslim men do it to themselves.

I had a student from Yemen a few years back and he had red hair. I honestly though it was red until his son told me later that his dad hennaed his hair because the "prophet" used to do this too.

Apparently in ancient times it was a common practice.
