A LONDON-BASED Arabic newspaper described as "fairly credible" a statement it carried yesterday that was attributed to al-Qaeda and included threats of attacks similar to those in Madrid last week on "America's lackeys".
Khaled Elshami, political editor of Al-Qods Al-Arabi newspaper, said the statement showed that al-Qaeda was "really trying to deliver a message, particularly to the British and the Americans".
The statement singled out Australia, Britain, Italy, Japan, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia with a warning that "brigades of death are at your gates".
"To America's lackeys we say: a lackey of America has destroyed his future by allying himself with the tyrant of the century," said the text signed by Abu-Hafs al-Masri/al-Qaeda Brigades.
"Jose Marie Aznar will be chucked into the dustbin of history," said the statement, referring to the Spanish prime minister who was swept out of power in general elections Sunday, just days after the Madrid train blasts that killed 201.
Abu-Hafs al-Masri/al-Qaeda Brigades claimed responsibility for the devastating bombings, a claim discounted by US officials.
The group also claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on a masonic lodge in Istanbul earlier this month and on Italian soldiers in Iraq.
We feed the world, pour AIDS money into poor countries, stand for freedom of all kinds. They blow up 9-year-olds of their own to kill Jews, trample their women, maim, kill and torture people, and WE'RE the tyrants?
The same can not be said of The Agence France-Presse.
