I've been saying for years the way to revive and restore the economy ( and it would have headed off these oil price problems as well ) was to-
1- drill for gas & oil like crazy- onshore, offshore, and in Alaska
2- go nuclear for power
3- convert stationary plants to clean coal technology
4- slash taxes and regulations like crazy

Wow- just in time for $3 a gallon gasoline...

Gas seen hitting $2 per gallon
Washington Times ^ | Tuesday, March 9, 2004 | By Tom Ramstack
Don't forget the knee-jerk reaction of all left wing liberals when it comes to energy--
First, they just lie. They always lie. They start every single argument with lies. They paint ANWR as some pristine wildlife refuge where all of our cute furry animals are sitting in green fields frolicking with each other.
Second, their history of bad predictions that never panned out are never brought up. All of this garbage was brought up decades ago with drilling in Purdhome Bay and the pipeline.
Third, the left  demands energy independence but can't get their brains out of the toilet long enough to realize what it will take to do so. They won't allow nuclear, coal digging, oil drilling, offshore rigs, etc. But they instead throw out more decade old arguments about solar power and wind power (unless those windmills are off the coast of Martha's Vineyard and ruin a liberals view).

When I started driving in 1977 the price of regular was $ 0.58 per gallon.
God forbid we drill Alaska...

Most of the price of a gallon of gas is from taxes. But don't hold your breath waiting for any pol to suggest a cut. I heard three retail clerks talking the other day about how we should tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Like that would fix everything. Sheesh. People are so unbelievably clueless.

U.S. sees cause for concern over gas
Yahoo ^ | 3/5/04 | James R. Healey and James Cox

The $1.60 or so a gallon we are paying is about 80 cents gas and 80 cents tax. Europeans $4.00 a gallon is 80 cents gas and $3.20 tax.

Bump Up In Gas Cap Fuels Price Increase -- The silver lining around this politically induced foolishness is that it makes the teaching of economics easier.  I taught my first economics class in the Fall of 1982. All of my students then clearly remembered the gasoline shortage of the summer of 1979 -- the long lines, the five-gallon-maximum purchases, the anxiety of not knowing even if you could find a station selling gasoline, and the crazy rationing schemes (such as selling on some days of the week only to motorists whose license tags ended in even numbers, and on other days of the week only to motorists whose license tags ended in odd numbers).

The belief in magic never dies.  Politicians in Hawaii apparently believe that ink on paper (backed up by policemen with guns) can keep the cost of gasoline lower than the price that would prevail on the market.

Sept. hadn't been this hot since 1912 [South Texas]

Heating bills going up 60-90% -- Because it was falsely deemed to be more enviro-friendly than coal or nuclear energy, there was a massive construction of gas-fired power plants around the country from 1995~2002, but without a corresponding increase in supplies such as new on/offshore gas drilling or more LNG terminals. Supply and demand is now taking affect.
Thank your neighborhood enviro-whackos for keeping new coal & nuke power plants and LNG terminals from being permitted for construction.

Democrats Attack Bill Crafted to Boost Gas and Oil Refineries -- What point, what platform can the Democratic party claim they stand upon for anything other than opposition? When oil prices were going up, they blamed Bush for that. When he released petroleum from the strategic reserve in response to a disaster to keep prices down, they ridiculed that. When gas was going through the roof, they blamed Bush for that. Now, we're trying to do the only real thing that will bring down gas prices (increase supplies) and they oppose that!

Oil Prices Slip Amid Waning Demand

Calgary: Delusional Behavior -- But this blog entry is not really about the tar sands, it's about the expectations of the people working off of them, which is that they assume the easy motoring utopia will continue indefinitely and are madly busy building a suburban infrastructure for it to dwell in, even while Canadians themselves are now paying the equivalent of $4 US a gallon for the privilege to commute forty miles a day.
Technology is already having a huge impact on learning, if not "education". Kids are learning skills that their parents never had -- through video and computer games -- and oddly, these skills at multitasking and quick decision-making will be very useful in the next generation. Through the History Channel, Fox News, FreeRepublic, and his iPod, my 14-year-old knows more about history, politics, current events, and music than I knew at twice his age.  Yes, we'll face problems in the decades to come, but capitalism -- backed up by the one-and-only U.S. Constitution -- will ensure that we will face these problems more effectively than other countries.
