I've been saying for years the way to revive and restore the economy ( and it would have headed off these oil price problems as well ) was to-
1- drill for gas & oil like crazy- onshore, offshore, and in Alaska
2- go nuclear for power
3- convert stationary plants to clean coal technology
4- slash taxes and regulations like crazy
Wow- just in time for $3 a gallon gasoline...
Don't forget the knee-jerk reaction of all left wing liberals when it comes to energy--
First, they just lie. They always lie. They start every single argument with lies. They paint ANWR as some pristine wildlife refuge where all of our cute furry animals are sitting in green fields frolicking with each other.
Second, their history of bad predictions that never panned out are never brought up. All of this garbage was brought up decades ago with drilling in Purdhome Bay and the pipeline.
Third, the left demands energy independence but can't get their brains out of the toilet long enough to realize what it will take to do so. They won't allow nuclear, coal digging, oil drilling, offshore rigs, etc. But they instead throw out more decade old arguments about solar power and wind power (unless those windmills are off the coast of Martha's Vineyard and ruin a liberals view).
-more-
When I started driving in 1977 the price of regular was $ 0.58 per gallon.
God forbid we drill Alaska...
Most of the price of a gallon of gas is from taxes. But don't hold your breath waiting for any pol to suggest a cut. I heard three retail clerks talking the other day about how we should tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Like that would fix everything. Sheesh. People are so unbelievably clueless.
The $1.60 or so a gallon we are paying is about 80 cents gas and 80 cents tax. Europeans $4.00 a gallon is 80 cents gas and $3.20 tax.

"Someone on the radio was predicting $5/gallon by summertime. I wonder if OPEC would do that to undermine Bush's re-election.." $3-3.50 won't surprise me. $5 seems a stretch unless unexpected events happen that panic the market, IMO. Yes. I think OPEC would and is doing such to undermine Bush's 2nd term to covertly punish America and to sway our voting public into concluding that it's in their best interest to vote a democrat-socialist into office in 2008. Subtle economic terrorism is more effective than blatant militaristic terrorism. They know it. They use it. It's just that they know it's a two-edged sword that could cut them too if they do it too fast and too hard causing an economic collapse on themselves as well.

A gallon of milk is $3.89. Sure glad my SUV doesn't run on milk. LOLDarn right- or spring water. I drive an SUV ( a 4-cylinder Amigo ) myself, and am more annoyed than anything else at gas prices.
We need to drill, onshore, offshore, and in Alaska.
We need to rescind Jimmy Carter's muddle-headed Executive Order banning the recycling of nuclear fuel.
Convert natural gas fired stationary plants to coal or oil.
Use more atomic power.
Get more oil from Canada. The list is endless- but there is plenty we could do, and need to be doing, right now.

Oil Prices Rise to Record $65 a Barrel -- This is ridiculous. Gas is pushing $2.50 a gallon here.....it costs me nearly thirty bucks to fill my damn tank. We could kick OPEC and the Chinese in the shorts if we expanded domestic production, but NOOO (John Belushi-esque version), we have to listen to the eco Nazis and tie our economy to foreign sources. Diesel fuel is almost or over
$3 a gallon today so the idea that we had five years ago of buying powered vehicles has gone out the window. I recall when diesel was a dollar less than gasoline.

Oil surges to $66 a barrel ... Reported on Drudge -- One person I read occasionally thinks natural gas has another 50% gain in price ahead of it from current levels eventually. Another thinks $3 per gallon gas is a given and $5 per gallon by year end 2006 is a possibility. I heard on a radio business report that a highly reputable market analyst is predicting $105 a barrel
this year.

Poll: Many Fear Financial Hit of Gas Prices -- I'm staying at home all the stinkin' time now. I cannot afford these prices. The majority of Americans don't have room in their budget for skyrocketing gas prices. But to tell you the truth, I don't think anything can help the pubs in '06 or '08. They gave the oil companies a huge tax break. There will probably be a recession by the end of 2006. And they are the party in charge. I would say dems are going to pick up a lot of seats.

I'm just glad I have a small 4 cylinder car and work only 5 miles from my home....I feel like I have a right to complain. People with gas hogs have no right.

Oil prices and job worries cut into growth in France -- the French have done one thing right. Nuclear power. Most of the electricity is supplied by nuclear reactors..of fast breeder type. They use distributed diesel and gas power to peak that when necessary.
Without this..the French economy would really be in negative numbers.
It is lesson for all of us. Nuclear is the answer..it is just surprising the the French left discovered and continue it.
Fort Worth cashing in on gas find -- [ We haven't begun to tap our huge reserves of natural gas. There's plenty of natural gas in Alaska, but no pipeline to get it down to the Lower 48. The Texas drilling should be a good start. ]
In Alaska not only a thousand years worth of methane but theres oil all over the place.. Its on federal land.. and cant be tapped.. since most of Alaska is federal land.. theres oil that cant even be probed to find the extent of it.. ALL held up by democrats.. The largest gold and copper deposit ever found anywhere(Pebble mine), too... all held up by so called conservation groups.. If "its" good for the country(whatever) .. democrats are against it..

Gas jumped a quarter for me since I last filled my tank. I'd ride my motorcycle, but it's 100 degrees every day. I'm officially cutting trips because I don't want to have to fill up.

I think someone posted on FR once that if Gore was elected gasoline would hit $3 a gallon...I recall that-- many years ago, the first candidate I ever publically supported was Barry Goldwater-- which may not seem that radical now, but my part of Georgia was 80% New Deal Democrat-- you could not run for office, even locally, and have a prayer of winning with an "R" before your name.
My little blue Kharman Gia with the Goldwater bumper sticker was the butt of much good-natured but rather rude commentary.
One crack I heard a lot was, "You support that crazy Goldwater feller and we're gonna find us in a Quagmire over in Vi-et-Nam!"
So naturally, after Light Bulb Johnson won, I kind of enjoyed tossing that back in their faces, "Yep, I backed that crazy Barry, and just like you told me, here we are in that Quagmire you mentioned back then..."
