Mauled magician says tiger was trying to save him

The magician left fighting for his life after being dragged off by a tiger during his stage show in Las Vegas, has said the animal was trying to take him to safety.

Roy Horn, one part of the famous Siegfried and Roy duo, was mauled by the tiger in front of a full house at The Mirage hotel-casino.

He has only now recovered the use of his voice and been able to explain the incident.

The 59-year-old said he remembered blacking out and falling towards the tiger during the show in Las Vegas on October 3 - his 59th birthday.

Eyewitnesses said Horn fell and the 270-kilo Bengal tiger respond by clamping its jaws around his neck and dragging him off stage.

Horn believes the tiger, called Montecore, sensed he was in distress and, as a cat would carry its kitten in its mouth by the nape of the neck, was trying to get him out of what it thought was danger.

Mauled magician says tiger was trying to save him

Hey Roy. Just for the record, I don't care what terrible fate I am facing. Don't send you tiger to save me! Got it?

In articles shortly after the event, Siegfried and others who were advancing this theory, pointed out convincingly that if the tiger had been interested in killing Roy, it would surely have succeeded. When a 600 pound tiger has you by the neck and wants to kill you, you're dead.

I find the "Saving him for dessert" theory much more convincing

LOL!

I don't have a tiger, but I have my little cats, who are always trying (but never quite succeeding) to save birds and mice.

When a 600 pound tiger has you by the neck and wants to kill you, you're dead.

This is true, he would have merely had to flick his neck back and forth a few times(as they do in nature) to break his neck instantly.

I think this explanation is completely plausible.

Tigers may think about this differently than we do. That said, I seem to remember eye-witness accounts that Roy knew something was wrong with the act and was hitting the tiger before he got carted off by the nape of the neck.

What has this world come to when even animal trainers and magicians are going over board with political correctness!

Roy was there, we were not. Roy saw what happened, we haven't. Roy knows that tiger better than anyone else on Earth.

So unless any further evidence arises, I'll take his analysis of the event over that of any of the armchair Freepers who feel so certain that they know what happened.

The tiger pierced Horn's skin and tasted his blood. By my understanding, the beast ripped his neck open pretty badly.

That is not a gesture of affection. The tiger sunk his teeth into his handler. It was agression.

Roy saw what happened, we haven't

Roy's view, with his head, and/or neck, in the tigers mouth was probably not the best view in the house.

Hollyfield did not have a better view of Tyson's ear biting than the rest of us did. In fact he didn't even know it until after it happened.

Was Roy even consious as the cat was walking off stage 'saving his life'?

It all sounds plausible to me. An Animal that size with bad intentions KILLS. A mans weight is insignificant to an animal that powerful even if the man is struggling as violently as he can. However, the animals teeth would be bearing the load and the result might be incidental punctures. If he provoked the cat in some unknowable way even a quick bat from a paw or an angry bite would have done FAR mor damage than was done to Roy.
