The Putin camp claims that its man was the only candidate capable of winning. Not true. There were at least three other candidates with a national following who decided not to enter the competition. Good for them. Now the three won't end up in one of Putin's camps.

Was George Washington a dictator because he ran unopposed-twice? There were plenty of Americans capable of being president with a national following at that time and they stayed out of the race.
