"he denounced the Basques terrorists."

I was kind of thinking that myself. But I know I saw other government officials' statements the following day.

Does anyone know if the Spanish Socialists have promised to pull all their troops out of Iraq?

"Looks like you were right yesterday."

I had a bad feeling. The press is essentially saying this is the Popular Party's fault for following Cowboy Bush into Iraq. Very little talk about blaming the actual perpetrators. It's all about how horrible Bush and America are.

Sadly, this a major blow against the West in the war against terrorism.

"I really thought better of the Spaniards"

I hate to say it, but I didn't. Europeans are collectively weak and gutless. If Europeans can find a way to avoid fighting the war on terror altogether - they will. The Spaniards have essentially done just that today.

"But where is the outrage, the anger, that should have swept PP to power, instead of this cowering."

The outrage is directed by the media against Bush and anyone who supports our President and the United States in general in the war on terror. European outrage is focused on Gitmo and on silliness like "global warming" and genetically modified crops.

Europeans will continue to take the easy way out until the level of terrorism in their own backyard rises to a level that their media can no longer make excuses for.

I am sorry to say, I suspect much the same is true in this country. I have almost as little faith in the majority of Americans as I do the spineless Europeans.

"that very evening, he denounced the Basques terrorists"
Yep, that reminded me of "1984"... "we were never at war with the muslims, we are now at war with the basques". The reason PP lost was because of their inexcusable refusal to look at Muslims as the likely perpetrator even after they arrested muslim suspects. The PP also could ahve used the bully pulpit to make a speech declaring war on Islamic Terror... I strongly beleive they would have won the election had they done these things.

I have to concur. If this works out that a train bombing in Madrid can completely alter Spanish foreign policy...then get ready for a wild summer in Europe.

This result sends exactly the wrong message, "Attack us, and we will run away-Spain"

If I were Blair I'd be ramping up internal security.....cause AQ now knows it works.

Oh but Spain has been holding up Airbus and EADS desicion making because Spain feels it is getting the short end of the stick in these deals. EADS is just the contractor, the moneies (and the premissions) involve governments. The decisions need to come out of the EC/EU - so yes Spain would be able to block it.

Yes, but I doubt John Howard will want to wait. He is probably going to retire in the next year or two and he'd probably want a Liberal (=Conservative down under) government under his belt before he turns it over (most likely to Peter Costello).

It is part of their platform. It is not so much the pullout will hurt us, I am more worry about the pullout by the other partners.

Maybe AQ will issue a tape and gloat about their victory in the votes today, that should shame the Spainards all the way into the history books, welcome to Neville Chamberlain of the 21st century. Europe is now the offical base for AQ. God blesses us all.

Well, we might as well point out the other possible election target with is the European Union parliamentary elections this June.

I suppose we can at least be thankful that conservatives are back in power in Greece, since that's on the other geographic vanguard of Europe versus the Islamic world.

As an idle aside, this Socialist victory in Spain almost certainly means that gay marriage or its equivalent will be implemented in the next year.

I've heard everything from as soon as they can get them on a plane (48 hours).....to keeping their troops in country until the end of June.

Consensus seems to be that the Socialist will maintain their troops until June, then they willturn tail and run home.

The bombing had only just happened. Perhaps they were too quick to say that they thought it was ETA, but the government was not wrong to be cautious as to the identity of the perpetrators. Perhaps if the election had been put off a week, the Spanish voters would have made a little more rational decision, but then who knows?

---Well, they have almost said as much. Just think of the French ambassador in London and his remark about "Why do we [EU] have to suffer that sh...y little country (Israel)".

The quote may not be totally accurate but according to Barbera Amiel that is what he meant. And he is not the alone... ---

The European reaction to aggression is to look around for a Checkoslovakia to through to the wolves. Remember Chamberlain and Mussolini were cheered as heroes after Munich.

They have been trying to throw Israel to the wolves for some time now. Too bad for them Israel has one very good friend and nuclear weapons.

The bodies are barely cold and these little weasels are wasting what anger they can muster against their own government. Disgusting.

I am quite sympathetic right now for those conservative nationalists in Spain who wanted to stand behind their government and stand behind the United States, but their countrymen have seen to it that cowardice and appeasement should be the first priority. I don't just suppose attacks like this will occur again in Europe, I expect them to, because now AQ knows they can hold Europe by the nuts and twist whenever they want.

No, I prefer knee-jerk reactions. Shows you how they really think. Their instinct decision should have been the opposite of what it was. If this had happened in Israel you would see the far-right parties have an overwhelming victory, lol. The Europeans deserve what they get from now on.

So, the Spanish Socialist won't fight for Spain, but they will fight for "Gay Weddings" to the end?

WTF is happening in this world?
