JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) Northern New Jersey is the first seaport in the nation to use new radiation detectors that scan incoming cargo containers for nuclear or radiological weapons before they leave the port, federal officials said Monday.
They hope to have similar devices in place at 90 percent of the nation's seaports by the end of summer.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Robert C. Bonner showed off five of the high-tech devices at the Global Marine Terminal, declaring they have greatly enhanced the nation's capability to keep out deadly terrorist weapons.
"America is safer, and the American people are safer," he said. "The best way to prevent a terrorist attack is by preventing terrorists or terrorist weapons from entering our country in the first instance."
