Baku. (Interfax-Azerbaijan) - Russia is still opposed to projects aimed at building pipelines along the bed of the Caspian Sea, said Deputy Foreign Minister Viktor Kalyuzhny, who is also the Russian president's special envoy on Caspian affairs.
"We always have to bear in mind the uniqueness of this reservoir, taking account of the fact that any negative phenomenon on one of the shores may effect all of the rest," he said.
"We should also take the region's propensity for earthquakes into consideration. Our opinion is that we should not put this unique reservoir at risk," he said.
Kalyuzhny is taking part in a session of the special working group on the legal status of the Caspian Sea in Baku.
Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are considering building an oil pipeline on the Caspian's bed as part of a cooperation program aimed at exporting energy resources to the European market.
