My spanish is a bit rusty (it was my first language - 27 years ago), but you might want to check on the general usage of "Lo siento". Normally, when I hear it, it carries the connotations of "I apologize".

hmmm, not quite what I wanted to communicate...
I learned my spanish from a supervisor I worked for who was from Puerto Rico. She used used it as I did. But that's Puerto Rico and maybe not the same else where.

Hey, I could be wrong. Like I said, it's been a long while, and the only play I get with it is with my family. Don't just go by my word, I'm just letting ya know what my instinct was when I read it. It's entirely possible it could be correct usage in either situation.
