African Americans have a mixed reaction to Teresa Heinz Kerry's claim that she's African American herself, at least according to an informal survey conducted this week by WMCA-NY radio host Kevin McCullough. On Tuesday McCullough posed the question to his African American listeners, asking if it was appropriate for the Mozambican-born first lady-wannabe to describe herself using the term, which is universally interpreted in the U.S. to mean black.
Caller Elgin from the Bronx said Heinz Kerry's claim didn't particularly bother him, but noted, "She's one of the whitest women imaginable. It's kind of reminiscent of Sammy Davis junior considering himself Jewish."
Carona from Brooklyn was less sympathetic, saying, "I resent all these people claiming they're black. When you're African-American, you know who's black and who's white."
Likewise, Kiesha from New Jersey had trouble with Mrs. Heinz-Kerry's claim, telling McCullough, "I don't even remember her ever saying she was born in Mozambique."
She wanted to know, "Which part of her African heritage is she identifying with? Is it the white or is it the black? And we all know that there isn't any black-African association that she has."
But Heinz Kerry, who has referred to herself as African American since she came to the U.S. in 1964, had just as many black defenders, who said it did bother them as long as she was referring to her place of birth and not her race.
McCullough, who moved to WMCA last July after building a following at WYLL in Chicago, took some heat from Anne of New Jersey. "I don't understand why this whole issue is being whipped up . . . She is African American, although she doesn't fit the role."
Arness from the Bronx agreed, saying, "It doesn't matter. Teresa Heinz Kerry is just acknowledging her ancestry."
Still, by the end of the debate, Dorothy from Rochelle Park was still skeptical, telling McCullough, "Ray Charles could see through this."

It's just a further indicator of how much the Democratic Party has come to take blacks for granted. It's like the Dems claim to be speaking for blacks now.

You know the libs are getting desperate to motivate their base constituency when the candidate and his wife suddenly learn they are black jews during the election season.

White Student Calls Self African-American
Friday, January 23, 2004
OMAHA, Neb. Officials disciplined students who papered their nearly all-white high school with posters advocating a white student from South Africa for the school's "Distinguished African American Student Award."
Peggy Rupprecht, spokeswoman for the Westside Community Schools (search) district, said administrators at Westside High School (search) discovered more than a hundred of the posters throughout the school first thing Monday Martin Luther King Jr. Day (search).
"The content of the posters, they believed, was inappropriate and insensitive to some members of our school community," Rupprecht said.
Citing privacy policies, Rupprecht said she could not specify what the penalties were or how many students were disciplined. But the mother of the boy pictured on the posters said he was suspended for two days.
The award has been given the last eight years to an outstanding black student as part of the school's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, she said.
The poster pictured junior Trevor Richards, 16, smiling and making a thumbs-up sign. A message at the top encouraged votes for him for next year's award.
Karen Richards said her son and his friends were not trying to hurt anyone.
"My son is not a racist," she told the Omaha World-Herald. "He has black friends, friends from Bangladesh and Egypt. Color has never been an issue in our home."
"It was a very innocent thing," she said.
Two of her son's friends were disciplined along with him, she said. A fourth student was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday criticizing the practice of recognizing only black student achievement with the award, she said.
Tylena Martin, a junior, said the poster had been on the door to her homeroom class where she is the only black student. She said she felt hurt by the posters and the backlash that ensued.
According to 2002-2003 state statistics, 56 Of Westside's 1,632 students are black

She's more african-american than I'll bet 99% of those calling themselves are.
God forbid those blacks born here would just simply call themselves, american.

Tell us more about her family. Was her father born in Africa? Was her mother?
I have a friend who was a US citizen and went to Germany with her husband during the Vietnam war. Their daughter was born in Germany and while she has German citizenship papers (cause that's how you get out of Germany), she's a US citizen.
Can someone clarify Heinz' parents roots.

Are they going after the Sammy Davis, Jr. vote?I'm sure the scumbag Democrats will continue to get the vote of Sammy Davis, Jr., along with the votes of millions of other dead, comatose, senile-demented, and outright ficticious voters. They always do.

I believe her parents were Portuguese.

Has anyone really checked Twerpy Teresa's woodpile? Her coloring indicates that she might have a black ancester in her "Roots".

Theresa Heinz Kerry and her relatives have also held black slaves and servants which further aligns her with the race.

Caller Elgin from the Bronx said Heinz Kerry's claim didn't particularly bother him, but noted, "She's one of the whitest women imaginable. It's kind of reminiscent of Sammy Davis junior considering himself Jewish." Ah, last time I checked, Judiasm was a religion not a race.
