Liberal Bias Seen in UNM Faculty

By Olivier Uyttebrouck Journal Staff Writer

A large majority of University of New Mexico faculty are registered Democrats, according to a study unveiled Wednesday by student Republicans.

The students used the study to argue that UNM faculty have a liberal bias, creating a "biased political atmosphere" that discourages some students from expressing opinions in class. "It may be that something is happening in the tenure process that prevents conservatives from being hired and promoted," said Scott Darnell, state chairman of the New Mexico Federation of College Republicans.

Faculty and administrators Wednesday rejected the suggestion that UNM hires faculty members based on party affiliation or political leanings.

Darnell said students examined the voter registration records of 895 professors, lecturers and adjunct professors in seven UNM schools and colleges that enroll undergraduates. UNM employs about 2,000 faculty members. The report said 83 percent of faculty members who registered with a political party are registered Democrats, 11 percent are Republicans and 6 percent are registered with another party.

The report also states that 100 percent of full-time professors at the UNM School of Law are registered Democrats. Suellyn Scarnecchia, law school dean, said she doesn't ask her faculty members about their political affiliations. "I think the idea that we would do hiring based on political affiliation really flies in the face of academic freedom," Scarnecchia said.

Next to the hold that liberal journalists have on the mainstream media, lawyers (and judical activists who are also lawyers) are the worst for leading a charge against traditional morals and values, and for driving up consumer costs in almost every segment of US society.

This is not shocking news, just shocking that it would even be printed. The liberal bias in the classroom is ridiculous. After being chastised in my "Blacks in American Politics" for suggesting that Ray Rhodes was fired from the Green Bay Packers because he was a bad coach, not because of racism, I pretty much concluded that marching lockstep with liberal radicals is all one can do to get an A in any non-technical class. God forbid you present something other than the tree-hugging hippie crap they spoonfeed the drooling masses.

No, they don't ask your political affiliation. They just check to see if your "mind's right."

Kind of like in Cool Hand Luke.

Up here in the Socialist capital of America, the U of Vermont is going hell-bent-for-leather to improve it's DIVERSITY.

But I haven't heard that the plan includes adding a few conservatives to the teaching staff.

One other point. If 100% of full time faculty were white, Evangelical Christians, male, or Hispanic or black, for that matter, the extreme imbalance between the diversity of the faculty and the diversity of the community would be seen as (I believe the word is prima facia) evidence that the hiring processed is discriminatory, regardless of the intended result. I believe the terms used are "systematically screening out specific types of candidates because of the inherent bias of the system."

Interesting follow-up to yesterday's thread ( (another foolish "outrage over the ads" column) Column:Bush's campaign misses target) by Doug From Upland regarding an anti-Bush editorial published in the UNM newspaper:
