Teacher resigns over scandal involving sexually explicit book
3/09/04 - FORT BEND COUNTY, TX) High school students are exposed to sexually explicit reading material by their teacher. This didn't take place in a sex education class -- it was in an algebra class!
School officials say the teacher was lending the racy book to her algebra students. Fort Bend ISD administrators say when they found out about the book, the teacher was placed on administrative leave.
There are no pictures but the material is extremely graphic, and in many instances, obscene. Algebra teacher Sylvia Fulton resigned from Marshall High School after she was put on administrative leave. Fort Bend ISD administrators are legally prohibited from speaking about personnel matters, but they could say this.
Fort Bend ISD Spokesperson Mary Ann Simpson told Eyewitness News, "It was brought to our attention by a parent of one of the students in her class that she had apparently loaned a book, an inappropriate book -- sexually explicit - to one of the students in her class and it was being passed around among a little group of students."
Ms. Fulton resigned before the school district completed the investigation. Had she not resigned, administrators say they would have terminated her for her actions.
"I can't imagine a teacher using judgment like that," said Simpson. "This is certainly an unusual circumstance that's occurred and shows very poor judgment."
The author describes the book as "the sexy escapades of a sorority like no other" and "a sorority dedicated to sexual freedom and the fulfillment of its members." Most parents picking up their children at Marshall said the resignation was appropriate.
"I would not have been happy had that been given to my daughter," said mother Brenda Simmons. "So, yes, it's best she resign."
Parent Rev. Yvonne McClelland said, "I feel she should have resigned because of the face that was she was doing was against the law, and it was leading children in the wrong way."
Our attempts to contact Ms. Fulton were unsuccessful.

From the description in the article, the book that the teacher gave to the student(s) is
The Sisters of APF by Zane. A quick look at the Amazon review indicates that the book has nothing to do with algebra.

"It was brought to our attention by a parent of one of the students in her class that she had apparently loaned a book, an inappropriate book -- sexually explicit - to one of the students in her class and it was being passed around among a little group of students." What isn't being mentioned is the sex of these students. Betting they are all female.

I remember text-only porno books like that from when I was a teenager. They were typically sold to traveling-salesman types in places like airports and bus stations. They were really dirty, too.
I hadn't heard that women were not only fans of such 'literary' experiences, but had even become authors. You learn something new every day...

From Amazon: "APF stands for Alpha Phi Fuckem, a sorority dedicated to sexual freedom and the fulfillment of its members."
Cute.

I am incensed by the close-minded judgementalism of these parents. Their misguided efforts at protecting their children from the realities of society will surely backfire when their teenagers grow up to be sexually maladjusted. </sarcasm>

I was loaned the Tropic of Cancer and Studs Lonigan by a high school teacher.
I stayed in the US Army for over twenty years and usually vote Republican (never voted Democrat).
I guess thats why I ended up so corrupted and vile - all because of dirty books.

I am reminded of a cartoon (by Sidney Harris?) of a professor writing a book, clumsily weaving the scientific concepts into a purple-prose bodice-ripper sex scene.

That's a great magazine - had a subscription a few years back. One of my favorite articles from them was "Self-Esteem - Wishing Makes It So", another was on scientists discovering that men & women were different.

Color me amazed... for grins I checked our county public library online catalog and found that there are many many copies checked out, being held for pick up, and even more copies on order. Our tax dollars at work
