[history]
San Jose became the first city in California to recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, although the decision only applies to municipal workers.
The city council defied objections from conservatives and voted 8-1 Tuesday to pass a motion that could provide more comprehensive health and retirement benefits to partners and family members of gay and lesbian city workers who get married in San Francisco or other cities that allow same-sex marriages.

Over 400 residents crowded into council chambers and more than 200 were in overflow seating downstairs, including dozens of outspoken Christians who brought copies of the Bible and quoted scriptures. More than 100 people addressed council members, and roughly three out of four speakers said they were opposed to same-sex marriage. < -snip- > The meeting, which featured an overwhelming number of white and middle-aged or senior citizens, contrasted with the demographics of Santa Clara County. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, only 54 percent of county residents are white, and 25 percent are under 18.
The meeting consisted of the folks who built the Silicon Valley, and have lived there for decades. I guess the Caucasians should just shut up and die. "Our city council won't make public policy by a show of hands in the room," Vossbrink said. "They look at where they want the community to move in the next five to 100 years and make the decision based on that judgment."
They have moved the city of my birth closer to Judgement. This was bound to happen, after they attempted to remove the Nativity from St. James Park, even as they paid a half million dollars for a serpentine statue of Quetzalcoatl, the object of the Aztecs human sacrificial adoration.

You mean in thousands of years of societies from around the world, the concept of same sex marriages is all post-Cold War?
But these people say that it is perfectly acceptable within their religion. Must be some new denomination then since no other culture EVER recognized same sex marriages.

Yes but if we start the clock on when these religions started to perform marriage ceremonies for same sex couples, they would likely all start ticking somewhere in the 1980s onward (1970s at the EARLIEST).
Considering thousands of years of mankind and so many different cultures, it certainly is a sign against same sex marriage that no culture ever considered such a notion (even if homosexual sodomy was tolerated).

I've been asking that for years. If a homosexual cannot betray his/her desires, how can a bisexual (who desires members of both sexes) possibly be satisfied marrying a member of just one sex? That would seem to be denying "1/2" of their idententities.

"including dozens of outspoken Christians who brought copies of the Bible and quoted scriptures."
"in response to a resident who compared California to Sodom, the ancient city that God destroyed for its wickedness."
"Larry Shoemaker quoted an Old Testament verse and brought a flashlight to council chambers because, he said, an earthquake and power outage would strike if the city recognized same-sex marriage. Shoemaker said he'd been fearing retribution since 1976, "
It is statements like these, which will play well on the evening news, of frothing at the mouth Christians, that will insure that gay marriage becomes law.

Scores of people opposed to same-sex marriages didn't bring bibles or quote scripture. There's plenty of opposition among people who aren't proclaiming an imminent doomsday.

"I don't live my life in fear of my God," At least this guy is more honest than most.
That's what is really behind this push by politicians to destroy marriage.
They do not fear God.
Bottom line - that's why this free republic in the mess it is in.
