Belle Glade also has the highest AIDS rate in the state. I remember when I lived in Boca Raton that a local high school (in liberal Boca!) was hesitant to let their football team play there.

I never heard anything about riots there. All I know is that the town is composed of Haitians, black Americans, Guatemalans. The stores are owned by Palestinean Arabs, many of whom are Christian. I've never seen a white person on the occasions where I had to drive through (more like speed through) town.

Now the riots in my dad's hometown of Newark in 1967, THOSE were riots, with the National Guard shooting at the police and vice versa.

Rereading the article, I think they are referring to the riots in Miami following the Martin Luther King assasination. The area was known as Lemon City until then, populated by blue collar whites. The latter fled to North Miami, but after the 1980 Liberty City riots, they fled the state entirely or moved to North Florida.

SE Florida is a state unto itself: the largest concentration of Jews in the nation (particularly in Palm Beach County, West Broward and coastal Miami-Dade), Latinos of all colors and income levels, Carribean blacks, American blacks and Gays. A "white" southern Baptist is about as rare as a martian down there.
