Much to the displeasure of certain American Republicans, the candidate John Kerry, on the road to the Democratic presidential nomination, proclaims his love for France in broad daylight (au grand jour).
And for cause. The senator of Massachusetts, 61 years old, has French roots and has mastered the language of Molière. His mother, Rosemary, was one of the daughters of the wealthy Forbes family, and settled in Saint-Briac, the small crested whaling town on the Emerald Coast of Brittany.
It was here, at the familys grand mansion where Kerry still returns from time to time, at which young John spent the holidays, in French style (a la francaise). One of his playmates was none other than his first cousin Brice Lalonde, one of the ecologist leaders of France (lHexagone), and former Environment Minister under Mitterrand! An avid reader of Gide and the French philosophers, the American Democratic candidatecandidate has never hidden his affection for the culture or cuisine from the other side of the Atlantic. He often punctuates his sentences with French expressions, at the greatest pleasure of his wife Teresa, widow of the ketchup king Heinz, also a polyglot spirit (lâme), who taught herself French. Thus it is not astonishing that the French appreciate the elegant style of the senator, who seems to be the ideal son-in-law for a cleanin up of Franco-American relations!
But in a transatlantic climate that remains tense, these influences give the adversaries of John Kerry easy weapons to denounce his program, even comparing him to president Jacques Chirac. France and its cultural values, the pride (fierte) of Kerry and his entourage, have been transformed into shameful passion by his detractors. For more information about the French roots of the Democratic candidate, his Breton area, his childhood and his family, the critics of his anti-French adversaries, go to the next issues of this newsletter, for new episodes devoted to the Francophile world of John Kerry. (Ie, more articles about Kerrys Francophilic world in upcoming issues.)
Actually, Kerry's head is supernaturally long and thin...MUD
FWIW, an increasing number of the French are for preserving their Christian heritage and preventing Islam from becoming the dominant religious force in France.
