[history]
March 8, 2004 -- Martha Stewart's ex-husband, Andy Stewart, feared the princess of perfection's long-held habit of telling whoppers would one day trigger her downfall, a former business partner told The Post yesterday. Norma Collier, who was Martha Stewart's first business partner when they started a catering business in Connecticut in 1974, said yesterday that Stewart's self-made disaster was "very sad" - and almost inevitable.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised; but note that they are all those celebrity hanger-oners.

What I will feel safer about is knowing that maybe some other trained/licensed ex-stock broker who worked on Wall Street is not selling shares early (on inside information) in a company that I also own shares in. You've got it exactly right. How would the people defending her like to have been a retiree purchasing her stock when she sold it. She cheated someone(s) out of money no different than selling a apartment that had been condemned and not revealing it.

It is so obvious to see the closet Clinton admirers here at FR... What the heck does my question have to do with Clinton?
I would have understood if you questioned my knowledge of stock trading. I would have even accepted a snide comment about being nieve....
But stooping so low as to calling me a Clinton admirer? I think you need to change your nickname to "Venom".....

Wearing an orange jumpsuit will do that! She broke laws and is going to have to pay the sentence for it. Why should SHE be given special treatment just because she is a celebrity? The laws are for all of us and it is central to civility.

The government needs money more than the self-satisfaction of putting her behind bars I can't believe you posted this. Regardless of Martha Stewart, Big Stupid Government needs a swift kick in the @ss, not more money.

Fine millionaires because they can afford it and make all of us average family folk go to jail??
I don't think so Scooter. Fine her AND put her in jail.

Probation is not the same as a suspended sentence.

If I were the pensioner, I'd probably be pretty happy, because the stock has gone up.

And yes, she does, the judge has the *discretion*, if not the inclination or reason, to give Martha probation.

I can't recall any bad experiences with any of the MS merchandise we've purchased at KMart. We bought some really soft sheets right after our fifth child was born. I don't remember the star quality, but I loved 'em. They didn't wear out overly fast either. We bought overpriced cupcake holders that were blue, green, and white, and I can't complain about anything other than the price and the location in the Super KMart. (we searched the cake aisle for the cheap holders, and they didn't have any. we came across the MS version by accident.) We have a medium saucepan that has the MS label. It was $25-$30, and I love it. Unfortunately, our eldest recently tried to cook three boxes of Kraft macaroni-n-cheese in it, and she scorched the stuff right onto the pan. No amount of SOS scrubbing has eliminated all of the burned-on-noodles. More recently, I purchased Martha's cheap plastic containers rather than spend an excessive amount on Tupperware. I love them because they are of a decent quality that lasts rather than some of the other brands out there. I'm sure I've purchased other stuff, but it's irrelevant.
MS should get a little time in the pokey. All she had to do is tell the truth. She didn't. Now she'll learn a lesson. Hopefully. We're never too old or rich or famous for that.

Imclone last traded today at $47.20. Martha Stewart sold as the stock dropped below $60.

Should have put in the link.
http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/nation/ny-usdrug063697862mar06,0,3863322.story?coll=ny-nationalnews-headlines and said the stock has gone -back- up (i.e. recovered nicely) and will probably continue upwards.
Allowing for the state of the current market, it would not have been a bad share to buy and hold onto at 58$.
It will probably hold it's value fairly well if the recently approved therapy fulfills its promise, and go on to make a profit for those who bought at $58.
Which brings me to another point I neglected to make. Selling stock and making a profit isn't a crime. Selling the stock wasn't Martha's crime, acting on her broker's advice wasn't a crime - it was always overreaching to allege that this was insider trading, even if the "worst" was assumed to be true about Martha.
You want her creamed for something she wasn't convicted of doing. She had a perfect right to sell the stock. Just not to lie about her broker calling her.
Ask me about the Apple I bought at a hundred and I'll tell you someone ought to go to jail (Dh for making me buy it) but of course I would be joking. Ask me if I should hold onto my shares and expect to make a profit, I'll say of course I should. I bought those shares for the long term and held onto them because I expect the companys products to take over the market. My prediciton about the i-pods and the penetration of high-end apples in the scientific sector was right on.
Retirees who risked money on imclone did it because of a promising new treatment for cancer it developed. It's been approved now. If they thought the 58$ buy was a good one because of that, they can hang onto the stock for exactly the same reason they did before.
If they are just trying to gamble and get a quick profit on the vagaries of market cycles, including human emotions of confidence or panic, then they get what they deserve, and should be glad the stock has held most of its value instead of tanking.

Just want to add somthing I left out - Selling stock and making a profit isn't a crime...even if the people who buy it from you lose money.
She wasn't convicted of insider trading. They couldn't even get that charge to a jury. Assuming the worst was true, her acting on her brokers tip isn't insider trading.

What has AGE got to do with it?
Rigas, the father, is in his 70s. Should he not go to jail, once convicted, or is looting Adelphia okay for a senior ctizen ?
To: dwilli
What's " dumb ", is the mushy group on FR, who don't understand the laws and want different sentencings for women, people aged 60,the famous, and/or those they like or admire.b

You don't know a thing about New Yorkers, but your knee jerk reaction to them. Introducing your biases, into the mix, doesn't add anything and is irrelevant.
The jurors convicted Martha, because of the facts presented at the trial. If,OTOH, they all had been only envious, they would have acquitted her, because she has so much.
Your own projections are at play here...even though you are blind to that fact. LOL
To: dwilli
You're completely wrong, about the interview given by that black juror. Appeals can't be based on that. But thank you, for making FR look like DU, with each of your posts.
To: Reelect President Dubya
She did, but let's wait and see what the jury has to say about that, after her civil trial, for insider trading is completed. And yes, since you don't know, the SEC is along with nongovernmental parties, bringing her to trial, soon, on that.
To: nopardons
Stereotypes about New Yorkers are as bad and untruthful as those about Southerners or anyone else. Tsk tsk on these people.

"Community service might save her stinking soul"..
Going along with that thought, it would be demeaning for Ms Stewart if she were sentenced to wash dishes and pots & pans at a homeless shelter, every night for a solid year. I can see it now :~)
Perhaps Martha would rather do time in Prison then slave for the homeless?
