Jeff Cooper is known as the
Father of American Pistolcraft and is a LEGEND in gun circles. I believe he was a Colonel in the USMC reserves and served I think in WWII in the Pacific theatre or perhaps it was Korea. He is in his 80's so I'm inclined to think WWII. I have corresponded with him on several occasions and a number of my friends are graduates of the American Pistol Institute otherwise known as
GUNSITE which he founded and still teaches at today.
He has a monthly column in "Guns and Ammo" magazine known as "Cooper's Corner." But I highly recommend his two books: "The Gargantuan Gunsite Gossip" which is a huge collection of quotes on guns, the so called gun culture and the real America. Also, "To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth" I have them both and treasure them to the point that I don't loan them, ever. I think the first may be out of print, but the second is probably available. I bought Gunsite Gossip at a gunshow and the other at a bookstore.
I seriously doubt he was ever a CIA operative. He evinces a lot of distaste for that crew and the intelligence field in general.
Consider a "Cooperism" from Gunsite Gossip: "Blessed is he, who in the face of death, thinks ONLY of the Front Sight."

Served in Korea and in WW-II, in the Pacific theater. IIRC, He has a "kill" with a 1911A1. It was in Korea, from a moving jeep I believe. :)
His Commentaries are available on several websites. The one I have bookmarked is http://www.dvc.org.uk/~johnny/jeff/. : another ishttp://www.molonlabe.net/Commentaries/
A whole list of links to the commentaries can be found on Father Frog's page Read about Lt. Col. Cooper here or here

i guess that picture was taken right before they told ms. cohen "finger off trigger and always look DOWNrange." Huh? Ms. Cohen has one hand on the forestock and the other hand several inches from her rifle. Ms. Ocben has one hand on the forestock and the other completely behind the trigger guard. I can't see what Ms. Sevcik's left index finger is doing, but I don't think it's flexed.

no, the other picture below the first one.
To: thefactor
no, the other picture below the first one. Ah, okay. Though I don't see where her trigger finger is, it could be behind the rear of the trigger guard which would be a perfectly-safe place. And if something demands attention, isn't the proper action to look at it (with finger in a safe place, which it may or may not be in this picture) while keeping the gun pointed downrange? Actually, learning to turn one's head without instinctively pointing what one's holding in the same direction is probably a very good thing for an instructor to teach.

"Col" Cooper is a hoot to read - just when I figure he's gone right off the deep end, he'll write something I COULDN'T AGREE WITH MORE. He's an unapologetic - if occasionally pedantic - bona fide ass kicker.
I don't agree with him all the time - Scout Rifle, anyone? - but for the most part he's a national treasure.
