"Bangert was busy "working the phones," calling veterans and their families. His status as a veteran reaching out to a fellow veteran helped a lot, he said. "There is a connection immediately."

Veterans, Bangert said, have been an untapped political resource. "Veterans account for 19 percent of the population, and they've never been mobilized," Bangert said."

Hates US veterans (when talking to them):

"I'm okay with Viet Nam- there the war is way over, it is here that closure has not occurred. I have many friends over there as well as here. My friends over there include many former PAVN [People's Army Of Vietnam] soldiers who once fought against me- their friendship is a gift which I cherish- I don't pretend you are my enemies today- but you sure act it. Think about this. I'll take them anyDAY over most of you. And that is a fact."

BTW, Bangert claims to have some disability from Vietnam which has kept him from working.

Oddly enough, it has never kept him from protesting against the Vietnam war, camping out on the Mall, occupying Betsy Ross's house and wanting to demolish it.)

This disability never kept Bangert from working for Kerry's campaigns or jetting back and forth to Vietnam--where he spends much of his time.

It never stopped him from performing onstage, such as with Pete Seeger last year--where he once again sang the Viet Cong National Anthem and the hymn to Ho Chi Minh.

But one of Bangert's favorite axes to grind is that the Veterans don't get enough benefits. I think he is really talking about himself.

He went to Vietnam and now the world owes him a living for the rest of his life, apparently.

I recall reading something about this group also called something 'dogs' that helped him in his early Senate campaigns? I know there's a photo of the whole group with Kerry at Corbis.

Thanks for posting this. I'm not bragging when I say that I can smell a liar a mile away when it comes to someone making up stories about their experience in Vietnam. This guy Bangert makes me want to hurl and I only hope that Kerry keeps him around. Truthful Nam Vets will eat both of them alive!

Thank you for this post. I wondered about that "Band of Brothers" and Kerry has let people think they are the crewmen from his boat. Other than the man whose life he saved who showed up so opportunely in Iowa, I wonder where the rest of them are.
