CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) on Saturday brushed aside calls he pull political ads that use images of the devastated World Trade Center to show him as a strong leader in troubled times.

Despite pressure from families who lost relatives in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Bush said he "will continue to speak about the effects of 9/11 on our country and my presidency."

"I have an obligation to those who died. I have an obligation to those who were heroic in their attempts to rescue (the victims). And I won't forget that obligation," Bush told reporters at a joint news conference with Mexican President Vicente Fox (news - web sites) at Bush's Crawford, Texas, ranch.

"How this administration handled that day as well as the war on terror is worthy of discussion and I look forward to discussing that with the American people," he added.

The Bush campaign began running television ads on Thursday, in battleground states, in the opening salvo of a long campaign ahead of the Nov. 2 presidential election.

Two ads referred to the hijacked airliner attacks that killed about 3,000 as the Bush campaign seeks to portray him as a resolute leader.

One television spot shows the ruins of the World Trade Center behind an American flag while another shows firefighters removing the flag-draped remains of a victim.

The commercials have angered many victims' relatives, outraged at what they say is an attempt to politicize one of the darkest days in the nation's history. The Bush administration has defended the ads as relevant and "tasteful."

Two? There were 22 families who wrote a Letter In Support Of President Bush in Newsday. Betcha perky Katie Couric isn't going to invite them to appear on the Today Show so people can hear the other side of the story.

Of course they won't. They are under orders from their overseers in the DNC/DLC to crush President Bush at any cost. And WE are going to be the ones paying that cost.

One angle on this I have not seen yet is that Bush was an intended victim of 9/11. UA Flight 93 was targeting the White House before the passengers took on the highjackers. The terrorists were attempting to take out President Bush - he was a potential victim. As an intended victim and target of an assasination attempt, Bush has every right to use images of 9/11.

Very good point.  This is 'caller of the day' material.  I could use a free newsletter.

Yahoo has been consistant in posting negative news stories about Bush as of late! This is just one of many.

They are consistent in constantly trashing (esp. in their headlines) anything related to Bush, pubbies, conservatism, etc. I have had a my.yahoo page for 10 years now and while I detest them, it is a useful site for other reasons.
