If you take in more than you can and/or will burn off, you're gonna gain weight. No matter what you eat.

Atkins works for people who use it. They are just pointing out the population on a whole is not losing weight. In other words, the people who are not on atkins are not losing weight.

There's so much wrong with this, I don't know where to start. How about: In 1999, 70 percent of those surveyed were trying to eat less fat in their diets. And yet, as they endlessly tell us, we were getting fatter and fatter anyway. Doesn't that mean that diet didn't work? Or how about: The study assessed more than 4,000 people in the United States, Britain, Japan and China. China and Japan, huh? You don't suppose there could be a genetic component to BMI?

I am shocked. Shocked, I tell you. Does this mean that bacon and cheese are not health foods after all?

Don't forget, "calories" do count. I cannot lose weight on Adkins unless I cut down on calories, as well. Some people think they can lose wieght by eating a giant steak washed down with "low carb" beer.

Who would have thought reducing simple starches and sugars would take on the role of New Obsession (like tobacco and SUVs) in the addled corridors of the liberal media mind?

I have some high-protein toast turning brown in the toaster as I type. I'm also having some pecans over my high-protein cereal and locarb milk. That's going to be breakfast. What's great about the locarb milk is that it does not upset my stomache the way milk did years ago, when I stopped drinking it. Now I'm getting all that easy calcium again, and it's delicious.

An Atkins dieter eats an incredible lot of broccoli, beans, salads and fresh greens. I used to eat bread and pasta instead of those things. Keeping fresh veggies and fruit around is a challenge--it involves getting to the store more often. I used to just keep pasta dry in the pantry, along with the crackers. Atkins is not a cheap way of eating.

While I do enjoy lots of beef, I have fish at least two or three times a week. More, if you count canned fish like tuna and sardines for snacking.

Not only did I lose weight, but I've kept it off almost two years.

The only think I really miss is homemade corn bread, and I even have a little bit of that once in a while.

My brain hurts!

Do the Atkins.....Don't do the Atkins. Don't eat fruits....eat fruits. Don't eat grains......eat grains. Eat high protein meats.......don't eat meat.

I will admit that I have gone from 205 to 197 over the last month from being on an Atkins diet. However, the diet (as most diets are) is BOREING! In addition, I run and weight-lift, which is where I'm going right now (while watching FOX's 'business block' of shows while on the treadmill).

A lot of people having staked quite a bit on the low-fat, high-carb paradigm; they're not going to give it up easily no matter what the evidence says.

There's much more to health than simply keeping your weight down. You need to consider repair, immunity, and all the general bodily processes, which rely heavily on adequate and varied sources of protein. People don't live on energy and vitamins.

"The study assessed more than 4,000 people in the United States, Britain, Japan and China, asking them to write down everything they had eaten over two 24-hour periods."

This is just getting peoplemto write down what they eat. The people who ate more meat were not necessarily follwing Atkins or any other plan. If you eat meat and fat still eat even a normal amount of carbs for an American, you are not going to get any benefit. Yes. The guys who eat three hamburgers for lunch and a 24 oz porterhouse steak with baked potato for dinnier is not going to be thin, unless he runs marathons.

As Rush said, the reason Atkins works is because it supresses appetite. I love the fact that I can watch my wife and kids eat sweets or other high carb treats, and I do not yearn to have any high-carb stuff myself.

We should expect continued attacks against the Atkins Nutritional approach, because it hurts the sales of many foods. Soda companies and snack companies are very rich and powerful, and I would not be surprised to find Congressional hearings featuring many damaging witneses against Atkins.

It does work however that doesn't mean you get ot load up on the transfatty fats. People are stupid.

"Americans are eating more fat and cholesterol as "low-carb" diets ... '

This is just plain stupid and NOT follow the Atkins recommendations. It's no wonder they are NOT losing weight.

I was not overweight by much but decided to give basic Atkins a try. Needed to drop maybe 5 pounds (6’1”, 194), I’ve dropped about 12 without really trying. Feeling good with lots of energy. Breakfast is bacon or a beef patty, eggs and some veggies, lunch is fresh veggies and a can of tuna and dinner a pork chop with veggies. I mix it up a bit but it’s been pretty much the same for about 3 weeks. Like magic, the excess weight dropped away. It’s a kick; I realize that my metabolism is probably pretty good but still, what a great life style.

I’m really starting to think the low fat diet we’ve been inundated with over the past 25 years was a big scam. No tinfoil hats but damn. To all those people out there who have struggled and are finally starting to get somewhere on the Atkins diet, keep going and don’t let the stories that have been coming out in the past few months slow you down. Politics and money are behind it. Well, you know your politics and your money is your own. Low carb, exercise and drink lots of water….

Lost 25 lbs. in 4 weeks and the part about not being able to eat veggies is pure B.S. On the induction phase you can eat 2 cups of salad and one cup veggies a day. After induction you start adding more carbs every week or two.
