The average temperature of all the world's oceans over all depths is 3 degrees above freezing. Fortunately ice floats.

I agree the scientists don't have a definitive answer. But whether man made or the result of a piece of space rock hitting, the fact is there is the possibility of life altering change on Earth. We don't like to think about it, but it can happen and quickly. All political argument will be irrelevant if and when that happens.

I feel fine to, BUT ....

What happens if we get hit by a comet or asteroid? ...... heads it gets cooler, tails it gets warmer.

I get the distinct feeling that these people don't have a clue.

When Greenland thaws out and actually turns green again we will be back where we started in 900AD. Round tripper. Bummer, should have sold high.

Combine this with Peak Oil and you have the perfect storm. It will be impossible to heat the multi-million dollar mansions, yet heating will be necessary to protect the investment.

Global warming causes global cooling. Guess the global warming model wasn't working out. I happened to have a 100 year old book which gave the mean January temp for Rochester New York from 1876-1886 (approx 21 degrees). The mean remains the same today.

This would be the John F'n Kerry approach to global climate change. I't's ice, no wait I meant it's warming, no wait it's ice.... uhh uhh I'm A DECORATED VET!!!!!!!

Perhaps I can help. The bottom line is, if we don't all adopt global socialism, something really bad is going to happen to us all.

I see a fitting tribute to Charlie Dog (from Loony Toons fame), as voiced by Mel Blanc:

Charlie Dog: I can see it all now... THE CITY!!! The HIGH TOWERS!!! Cold, cruel, ominous... Closing down on ya from every side until ya can't breath! Closer! Closer! Ya can't breath... cough, cough... Trapped, ya can't think! Beep beep!! Look out for that truck!!! Honk honk, look out for that taxi!! Hon, honk, beep, beep...

Hark! What's that??? The towers, they're falling!!!! AGGGGHHHHHHHH!!

in other words, the environment is to a great extent self-correcting.

*yawn*

I am really beginning to suspect that this noise about weather comes solely from "scientists" worried about maintaining their grant funding.

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

the mean January temp for Rochester New York from 1876-1886 (approx 21 degrees).

But then the spring of 53 brought a sudden 60 in January, and we knew then that Global Warming had struck our planet. It was Eisenhower's fault.

Ice is Key

Sign up for EXPRESS SCIENCE NEWS delivery There are several satellites keeping an all-weather watch on ice cover in the Arctic. NASA's Aqua satellite, for instance, carries a Japanese-built sensor called the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS ("AMSR-E" for short). Using microwaves, rather than visible light, AMSR-E can penetrate clouds and offer uninterrupted surveillance of the ice, even at night, explains Roy Spencer, the instrument's principal investigator at the Global Hydrology and Climate Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Other ice-watching satellites, operated by NASA, NOAA and the Dept. of Defense, use similar technology.

Well shoot, there's the problem. What happens when you put ice in the microwave?

It melts!

Duh!

And this is being done by scientists?

This gives Kerry and his eco-wacko sympathizers maximum flip-flop flexibility. They can say "heads I win, tails you lose" with impunity. They can be where they love to be: on both sides of an issue for maximum political approval. This removes the possibility of their opposition using actual weather conditions to argue against their alarmist ravings.

Please, scientists of the world, get together and come to some unified conclusion so we little ill-informed peons can make arrangements for when the sky falls.

The article is no idle threat. It works like this. There is a massive water current system that moves heat from the equator to Greenland along America east coast, the Gulf Stream. This current is *responsible* for our moderate world climate. When it reaches Greenland, massive salinity causes the water to sink.

This sinking is required to keep us out of an ice age. It is called the global conveyor and is a river of temperature equalization.

If there is too much fresh water introduced into the current, the water stops sinking and the poles ice over and the world freezes up. Restarting the current is very difficult but stopping it happens very fast, within decades.

That is how global warming leads to an ice age.

An excellent book to read on this subject is Not by Fire but by Ice: Discover What Killed the Dinosaurs...and Why It Could Soon Kill Us by Robert W. Felix

Check out this site: http://www.iceagenow.com/

One review: "Felix uses the geologic record to correlate the occurrence of magnetic reversals with sudden mass extinctions, which cannot be dismissed as mere coincidence when it has happened repeatedly over the earths history. Felix does not explain certain other phenomena, such as why the woolly mammoths died instantly (some of them while in the act of eating, with flowers still in their mouths) nor why they were fast-frozen, leaving their bodily cells intact. Nor do I entirely buy (nor understand) Felixs theory for how magnetic pole reversals cause ice ages. But no matter: this is still a valuable and compelling read to convince one that a major climate change can occur suddenly, with disastrous consequences and, unfortunately, that another one is imminent. "

I am about 2/3 of the way through the book. It is an easy read. The point is that man is not the cause of the cyclical changes. Felix makes some compelling scientific arguments that the next Ice Age is upon us, i.e. within the next decade. Ice ages have occurred almost like clockwork over millions of years.
