Gibson's Blood Libel

By Charles Krauthammer Friday, March 5, 2004; Page A23

Every people has its story. Every people has the right to its story. And every people has a responsibility for its story. ...[snip]

Christians have their story too: the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Why is this story different from other stories? Because it is not a family affair of coreligionists. If it were, few people outside the circle of believers would be concerned about it. This particular story involves other people. With the notable exception of a few Romans, these people are Jews. And in the story, they come off rather badly.

Because of that peculiarity, the crucifixion is not just a story; it is a story with its own story -- a history of centuries of relentless, and at times savage, persecution of Jews in Christian lands. This history is what moved Vatican II, in a noble act of theological reflection, to decree in 1965 that the Passion of Christ should henceforth be understood with great care so as to unteach the lesson that had been taught for almost two millennia: that the Jews were Christ killers.

Is Krauthammer gay?

What provoked you to ask that question? Something he wrote?

Krauthammer is, IIRC, a quadraplegic as a result of a diving accident many years ago. He's an MD with a specialty in psychiatry, though I don't know if he's ever practiced.

How'd you get SMCN to answer your questions? He won't answer any of mine.

Simon who helped carry the cross

I was personally most intrigued by this character. What's his story?

just as I think it tasteless and offensive for Gibson to throw a movie like this into the faces of those Jews who, not unjustly, find it disturbing--

Mel hasn't thrown anything in anyone's face....

Last I heard, movie theatre's have a PAY TO GO policy.

If there is chance someone would find it disturbing, the need only do what the LIBERALS always tell us to do when we object to something..."CHANGE THE CHANNEL, DON'T BUY IT, DON"T LISTEN TO IT or DON"T GO SEE IT"

What ever happened to that Liberal Umbrella excuse of PRO-CHOICE?

Oh, I forgot, it only pertains to Non-Christians.

A comment of such stupidity, that the mind reels.

Kinda like saying Abe Foxman was right, huh?

"They are Mona Charen, William Saffire, and Charles Krauthammer."

I've always considered three columnists to be particularly uninsightful (among plenty of others.) Their take on "The Passion" simply confirms this.

What's his story?

from the Gospel of Mark: "They pressed into service a passer-by coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and Rufus), to bear His cross."

Ok your first post comes from Zechariah tells us all about Christ his first advent and the second.

Your second comes from one of my favorites Jeremiah 2:

You seem to be pointing to something but stop short to get there.

Now Jeremiah was really treated well by his brothers, and yet interesting enough Jeremiah took those tender twigs and transplanted them.

"You killed my God."

As if man could kill God. Come on.

The most unendearing aspect of Christianity is its insistence that only through Christianity can one "be saved"; all others being damned to eternal torture. Such a belief system breeds a certain arrogance, and fosters contempt for people of other faiths.

So you don't approve of Christianity then.

I only asked because ALL the gay conservatives have turned on Gibson and thought that this could be an explanation of Krauthammer's position. I know nothing about the man.

So you don't like Southern or Christian heritage either and think we all need to live on eggshells so as not to offend.

Meanwhile. We as the perennial offenders are considered open season to be offended. Noone of these current whiners ever say squat about that.

I'll pass, thanks. You're soft and wish to liked by all.

GOP Courts Jewish Vote Smirk.

Why the smirk? I've been trying since grade school - 40 years ago - to make Republicans out of Jewish friends. No successes that I know of. If an official GOP effort succeeds, it calls for a smile - not a smirk. But given the liberalism of the Jewish community, I'm not optimistic.

ALL the gay conservatives have turned on Gibson

Just who are the "gay conservatives"? Don't list Sullivan, he's not a conservative - - used to be editor of the liberal New Republic. Brooks isn't conservative, either; he's fine with big government.

What do YOU called an baseless accusation and claim of "Blood Libel"? That's "balance"??

It seems that accusing Christians of "blood libel" isn't really that bad...
