Gibson's Blood Libel

Every people has its story. Every people has the right to its story. And every people has a responsibility for its story. ...[snip]

Christians have their story too: the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Why is this story different from other stories? Because it is not a family affair of coreligionists. If it were, few people outside the circle of believers would be concerned about it. This particular story involves other people. With the notable exception of a few Romans, these people are Jews. And in the story, they come off rather badly.

Because of that peculiarity, the crucifixion is not just a story; it is a story with its own story -- a history of centuries of relentless, and at times savage, persecution of Jews in Christian lands. This history is what moved Vatican II, in a noble act of theological reflection, to decree in 1965 that the Passion of Christ should henceforth be understood with great care so as to unteach the lesson that had been taught for almost two millennia: that the Jews were Christ killers.

It seems as if an unintended consequence of this film is Jews having to come to grips with their hostility towards Christianity.

I have had sympathetic Jewish friends here tell me that is not true. Well, it may not be for some, but it is painfully obvious that it is precisely that for some here on this very thread. There is no resolution for that.

While this is an important point, it's impertinent to the discussion at hand. You were predicting that "The Passion of the Christ" would unleash anti-Semitism in Europe.

The roots of modern Eurpoean anti-Semitism are not in Christianity.

Jesus Christ is the enemy of the irreligious intelligentsia in Europe. They have greater reason to fear this film than do the Jews.

This is the very first thread that has turned into a flame war on this subject that I have seen. Why now?

Because it seems some Liberty Forum types have crawled out from under their rocks, in an attempt to prove Abe Foxman was right about this movie afterall. They suck.

What movie was too bloody? Surely, NOT "The Passion!" Indeed, "The Passion" was NOT BLOODY ENOUGH!!!

According to Isaiah 52:14, "Just as there were many who were appalled at Him---His appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and His form marred beyond human likeness..."

I had no trouble at all recognizing that the actor who played Jesus was a man.

BTW, to All, Isaiah 53:6 states: "We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all."

Isaiah 53:10 says: "Yet it was the LORD's will to crush Him and cause Him to suffer, and though the LORD makes His life a guilt offering..."

I asked on an earlier post for someone...ANYONE...to show me where in the above Scripture that JEWS are to "blame" for Jesus' death. So far, no one has been able to do so.

Isaiah is VERY CLEAR that GOD Himself CHOSE to have Jesus pay the price to redeem ALL of us!!!!! It's up to each of us to CHOOSE to accept His GIFT of redemption.

Well, Krauthammer is quoted above and ok I'll fess up. It's just most of the Jews I know and I'm extrapolating from that and what I have read. I suppose you will only accept a scientific poll. This will take me a few days. OK?
