This has been the case for several decades now.
While it's true in the intervening years the CPUSA has fielded its own presidential candidates (remember Gus Hall?), the dam broke in '68, when the New Left, as it was called then, took advantage of the disarray the Democrats were in and launched an all-out assault for the heart, mind and control of the party.
'68 was the mainstream Democrats last gasp. It's standard-bearer that year, Hubert Humphrey, was the last of the old Democratic Cold Warriors to stand as a presidential candidate.
The rot inside the party was manifest, and Humphrey's demeanor as a sunny New-Deal optimist just didn't fit in with the reality of the times. That, along with the albatross around his neck named Lyndon Baines Johnson, made a nearly impossible task for him seem even more unenviable.
The election was close, but that was primarily because of the George Wallce factor. It is true Wallace was a democrat, and some arguments were put forth that his presence in the race cost Humphrey the South, but that simply wasn't true.
The once-solid South had changed since the FDR coalition days, and Wallace's appeal, while clicking with both sides of the aisle, seemed a lot more resonant with Republicans than Democrats, mainly because the message was more at home with that constituency.
That electoral seismic shift was very deftly articulated by Kevin Phillips in his first book, The Emerging Republican Majority.
Of course, we all found out after the election that Dick Nixon was not quite who we thought he was, or maybe never was. He was very strong on foreign affairs, but the man had issues - let's face it.
Gerry Ford was a pretty good caretaker President after the Nixon fallout, but I never regarded the man as presidential timber.
The less said about Jimmy Carter, the better, but I will say this. This man was the first front man, presidentially-speaking, of the now-New Left dominated Democratic party. This is the man who entrusted the nation's stewardship of law enforcement to Ramsey "I'm-so-far-Left-I've-disappeared" Clark, and this is the man who blamed YOU for the nation's "malaise".
Ronnie, winner of the Cold War simply by being the first Conservative in the office of President since WWII, needs no further introduction.
And with Bill Clinton, we saw the ultra-left that populates so much of our media groan for 8 straight years with orgasmic delight.
With that brief (?) history as our guide, realize that the CPUSA now feels emboldened enough (as does the rest of the left wing) to simply state the obvious - since these guys (democratic candidates) think like our guys, and since they have a much, much greater chance of winning than do our guys, it only makes sense we should back them. No one will notice, and more importantly, no one will care!
And the most obvious thing is, if the left's new Wunderkind wins, we get someone who's going to be left of Bill Clinton (!), and grate on people the way Jimmy Carter did.
This is the the Legacy of the New Left, and you would do well to educate, inform, threaten, plead, and/or cajole everyone you know this is no longer their grandfather's Democratic party.
These are Communists, and that's still a dirty word.

Damnation, but you've hit several nails on their collective heads. (Get it? "Collective"? Please forgive the late night, warped humor...)
But really, you're exactly right. In fact, it was around 1998 or so when the CPUSA named as their Woman (and I use the term loosely) of the Year none other than...Hillary!
Wish I could find the source...

And finally - we predicted this one last year, but the numbers were so good in 1998 that I want to try again - new members joining the Communist Party and the Young Communist League will double in 1999.
